Well well well,
It is Tolstoy so it cannot get anything lower than 4 stars.
The writing style as per usual is magistral, powerful and cinema like. I loved some of the war parts that happened in nature and all the nice oppositions and contrasts that came with it. However I need to say it this is is far too long ! ( I can’t believe Tolstoy wrote 9 drafts of this ! 9!!)
Some people described this as the ultimate book about humanity because it dealt with all the emotions humans can have ( and I agree I mean with 1300 pages the author had time to go through all the emotions )
Of course I was delighted to read about the Russian high society once again and all their tumultuous relationships. I loved the ending and how the couples kept changing ( an ancient love island if you ask me )
If someone is interested in reading Tolstoy I was still advise to read Anna Kerennina first as I believe it is his best work.
This doesn’t read like a novel but rather a fictional historical chronicles where the moral is we can never define history or try to argument history we can only imagine what might have happen. Tolstoy makes it his mission to remind us that there are forces stronger than us and it is pointless for us, little humans, to try to think our choices matter much in the grand scheme of things.
Also I loved Pierre and Alexei the most !

I read this over a year, one chapter a day, and it’s really very very good as long as the author manages to stay out of his own text. Tolstoy is so observant of human nature and such a skilled writer, and uncannily good on the link between body and soul. I’d really like to give it 4,5 points, deducting a point for the tiresome flogging of dead horses in the philosophical chapters.

It was not worth it.
challenging emotional informative tense slow-paced

Lange zit, maar heeft alles: van veldslagen tot geheime liefdes. De 40 pagina’s zware filosofische kost op het eind waren een onaangename verrassing.

A tough read to start with, a lot of characters to get my head round but I did start to really enjoy it and looked forward to picking it up each time. I'm glad I stuck with it.
