Similar to "Nickeled and Dimed," which I read many years ago and still remember, or more recently Tara Westover's "Educated," this is a memoir of life in the lower working class. Stephanie Land is a single mom who spends several years stuck in a cycle of poverty -- without a safety net of a supportive family, with some bad choices in men, and having to constantly hustle to make ends meet. Working as a maid makes her literally invisible. While the book is her personal story, it points to the systemic problems of a lack of safe and affordable housing, decent child care options, transportation, mental health counseling after domestic violence, and so much more.

My wife and I loved the miniseries Maid and when I found out it was based on a book, I wanted to read the story. Much is changed and added to for the miniseries, but the essence, the struggle of being a single parent and low income, is held true.
First, to address some of the criticisms. Does Land hold some accountability for bad decisions and poor planning? Of course, just like us all. But Land had poor support, guidance, and training. Once facing low income, an abusive mate, and single parenthood, the safety nets provided are difficult to obtain, not enough support, yet difficult to free yourself from. Not to mention the social stigma and self-esteem issues covered in the book.
Do I agree with all of Land's choices? No. But I also was not in those situations dealing with her feelings of depression and futility, nor did I have her knowledge or lack thereof, of options.
Reading through some of the reviews, I wish this book led more to a discussion of safety nets, demonizing welfare users in the public discourse, and how to provide guidance and instruction.

This book will make you reexamine your preconceived notions about welfare. A memoir about a single mother's unexpected descent into poverty, it is reflective and hopeful even as it gives a depressing look into our current welfare system.
However, there is a recurring theme that is somewhat glossed over by the author. Her initial problem is caused by an unplanned pregnancy, a boyfriend (the father) who is verbally and emotionally abusive, and her need to get away from him in order to be safe and raise her baby. However, she seems to jump from one bad relationship to another, which only contributes to the lack of stability in her life.
