In fiction, making the main character unlikable and unreliable is a choice. I doubt that Stephanie Land, in writing about herself, wanted to portray herself as an unreliable narrator and unlikable character but that is exactly what she did. I had such a hard time feeling bad for her or empathizing with her when she continuously made bad choices and whined for page after page after page. This is not the book she thought it would be.

She paints a difficult life, it should be easy to feel sorry for her, but she also seemingly feels sorry for those "rich" families that seem to be living incomplete lives. Some of what she seems to want to accomplish is to put a face on welfare recipients, though I wonder if anyone's opinion would change after reading her story.
