There are some things you can take from this book, but it’s missing something.

This is a human story: it’s vulnerable, raw and honest. But it doesn’t have enough Jesus in it.

It feels as though Jesus is being talked about from a different room, but wasn’t invited to come in and join the conversation.

I need more of what Jesus says, and less about how she fixed it.

Nobody is self-sufficient, we all rely on God. Tell me about that.

Just what I needed to read during a hectic season of life. Refreshing and peaceful. It is not a how to book but a what I lived book. And, I think I learned a lot from reading her missteps and successes. Definitely going to approach life with a new perspective after reading this.

I listened to the audiobook. There were a few really great points, but mostly it was not super applicable for me. I can see how it would speak to a lot of women I know, but it wasn't exactly what I was expecting. There was a lot less of how to be present and a lot more of why. Also, most of her examples centered around being chronically busy as a means of affirmation and seeking fulfillment through work/service. That's not really my issue, but I can see how it could help others.

I picked up this book because of the title. Had I known more about the beliefs of the author and how heavily imbued her writing is with her faith, which I do not share, I would not have picked it up. That being said, there are some gems in here as she shares her story of building a better life. If you are so inclined in your thinking, there are good reminders here. But the book is pro ably more for you if you are a white Christian American mother and wife as so much of her story is anchored in these roles she has chosen for herself.

If you’ve read Rachel Hollis’ girl wash your face book, this had a similar vibe to it. At first I was like “oh another book telling me to get my priorities straight”, but after I gave it more time I realized it was the message I needed to alter my life choices. Definitely a must!

Sometimes when I read a self help book/memoir I’m looking for an “ah-ha” moment. If I’m feeling especially greedy, I want the book to be FULL of them. This was not what Present Over Perfect was all about.

There were several moments where a paragraph or quote would really hit me, and I think I’m approaching life differently (in a positive way!) as a result.

However, there were moments of her narrative that I didn’t connect with as readily because they didn’t match my unique experience - and that’s okay. I’m thankful she shared her life and what was on her heart.

All in all, it was absolutely worth the read.

So good! I listened to it but I think I need to get myself a hard copy. Definitely a must read! Thank you Shauna for your beautiful words. This was a timely read for me.
