It is nearly impossible to summarize this book. souls + science = ????
It felt frenetic in many ways, and it could loosely be described as a cosmic horror sci-fi, including alien invasion, military action, queerness, exploitation & genocide, and maths/physics.

I was so taken with the first part of this book and the fish out of water existential alien buddy comedy it was shaping up to be, and then it became a military technothriller and and I was much less interested. It sustained me through the sagging middle with good old fashioned Dickinson stylistic stuff which I enjoy so much, and got me back a bit by the end because the weird Kill Six Billion Demons metaphysical stuff came back into view, but this just isn't the book I wanted it to be. Still, I can't help but like a book that contains the words "nerve angel," "Cultratic operancy," and "graser beam" and manages to make all of them feel earned.

EHRLICH: [Cheney] leaves no doubt that is the same dude. He looks exactly the same as he did 13 years ago! Same glasses…same head nods…
CHENEY: No.
EHRLICH: He still mainly keeps his hair here [gestures to one side of head] and here [gestures to other side of head]…and his word choice! “QUAGMIRE!”
CHENEY: It’s…it’s a quagmire.

There was so much going on in this book that i was confused a lot of the time.
It took me a while to get into this book. There was (what felt like) a weird philosophy lesson at the start. Once the plot finally gets going, I quickly discovered that in order to appreciate the thrilling plot (ominous too), I had to accept the depth and substance of the narrative v. try to understand every term/phrase offered. In essence, this is an alien invasion with a story about the human response. It's a solid scifi story with an in-depth literary approach and characters that, while largely forgettable (for me), are well crafted to move the story along.
If you enjoy your Sci Fi with a deep narrative and some philosophy (or really ethical/moral dilemma) thrown in, then give this a read.
Thanks to Netgalley for an ARC to read and review.
