This book was just ok. I found parts boring and it was slow moving. I was frustrated with Madeleine for just about the entire book for not telling Lina who her father was for so long out of fear he would hurt her. I would have liked to see Lina find out earlier in the book. This was Not Kristen Hannah’s best work but wasn’t awful.
I wasn’t prepared for how sad this was going to be but ultimately it was heartwarming and made me believe in love a little bit

Ik ben niet zo enthousiast over dit boek. Inhoudelijk is het een mooi verhaal, maar wel vrij voorspelbaar en clichématig. Bovendien gaan de meeste dingen net iets te makkelijk, waardoor de karakters wat op de oppervlakte blijven en als een blad aan een boom met de wind mee lijken te veranderen soms. Niet per se heel snel, maar wel bijna zonder slag of stoot.
Daarnaast is de vertaling echt matig. Er zitten meerdere letterlijke googletranslate aandoende vertalingen in, zoals 'ik heb voor vice-president gerend, en gewonnen' (I ran for vice-president and won). Op het moment dat ik gemakkelijk de Engelse formulering uit de Nederlandse zin kan halen, gaat er iets mis. Ook inhoudelijk lijkt het niet altijd kloppen. Iemand die in het ziekenhuis is en dan weer niet bijvoorbeeld. Ook kwam ik regelmatig spelfouten tegen of gemiste spaties. Erg jammer, want hierdoor deed het boek amateuristisch aan.

Lina grew up with a single mother - Madelaine Hillyard, who walked her way through medical school while being a teenage mom. Now she is a cardiologist. Lina doesn’t know who her father is because her mother never told her. When she turns 16 all she wants is to know who he is and she rebells, goes of the rails.
The only person who can rain her in - until he can’t - is priest Francis. A close friend of her mother‘s who has stepped in whenever he was needed.
And then there is Madelaine‘s first love - movie star Angel DeMarcos, who is also Francis‘ brother. He became Hollywood’s bad boy. She hasn’t seen him in 16 years … since he left her behind - pregnant and alone. All of a sudden he turns up at her hospital in mayor trouble and in dire need of help.
The relationship between these 4 characters unravels. They have to face the past but also overcome mayor obstacles.
This is my least favorite Kristin Hannah book so far. It’s not that I didn’t like the characters - they had lots of depth. I just couldn’t relate to the storyline. It was to far fetched for my taste. The writing itself is still good and touches a lot of things and still …
