A mix of pros and cons here. On the plus side, the writing flowed smoothly and the action was exciting. Additionally, the author managed to fill in the backstory adequately for new folks without being repetitive for existing fans. He also captured the essence of the characters as portrayed in the show, which is a tough trick.
On the other hand, it lacks the shininess of the show that keeps it from being fluffy. The show is just so pretty that the predictability and conventionality of the plots can be forgiven. While an effort was clearly made to be respectful to American indigenous peoples, Walking Crow fell a bit short of that. He was specifically Pawnee and the few details present in the story were more or less correct, so that was good. However, he also was in a bit of a stereotypical role for a "good Indian" including being a white man's sidekick andbeing killed in the process of serving white men's needs .
Overall, it's somewhat better than the level of quality that I generally expect from film-to-book tie-in literature. Fans of the show, especially those who love Martha Jones, should enjoy this.

Once again this book had very little actual story to it, but that is what I’ve come to expect from the Doctor who books, they are just a bit of fun, light reading. In this case they landed in the American West to find a fake healer actually healing people, and two dead-looking people shooting everything up to find said healer.
Martha is portrayed really well in this book. The way that she is written actually had me caring for the character which is quite rare for a Doctor Who novel as they usually lack that type of depth. There are parts where it shows her truly believing in her profession as a doctor-in-training and being annoyed by those who sell false cures to get rich. I liked the way that she was shown to be developing her own strength, such as when she bravely stood up to the Clades just as the Doctor would do, even though she was terrified. The strength she shows here reminded me of the episodes where she traveled the world spreading the story of the Doctor.
The Doctor’s strength was also shown once again as he battles against the Clade that tries to take over his mind and body, successfully reprogramming it with his mind. This is one of those moments that just serve to remind you that he isn’t human and can accomplish feats that a normal person would find impossible.
This book has a better depiction of the characters than is usually the case in the Doctor Who books and therefore it receives four stars.

David Tennant was my favorite Doctor, and this book does a great job bringing him back to life. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and want to read more.
Though I typically am not a crazy fan of the Wild West, I did enjoy this novel featuring the Tenth Doctor and Martha. It was written well; I could hear the characters voices as I read the words. Pretty fast paced.

This is what I want from a wild west Doctor Who story. The setting is utilised really well here in the slice of history it gives us, the tone of the story, the characters we encounter, and the sci-fi ideas it inspires. There's some great character exploration but 10 and Martha are particularly great here. The fun and adventure is balanced pretty well with the darker elements of the plot - it would fit in perfectly with the rest of series 3, and makes for a story that I can really visualise being made by the production team at the time.
set in the wild west about dangerous alien life forms created as weapons
I really liked this story. I could have easily imagined this was an episode of Doctor Who and James Swallow wrote perfectly the characters. I don't usually like Martha that much but she was pretty cool in this story.
