Piece by Piece | Daemon Manx
Genre: Horror

Piece by Piece is a two story horror collection by author Daemon Manx. This book was recommended to me in one of my horror book groups. Described as a ‘horror with heart’ I eager dived into this one, but boy was I unprepared. How on earth Daemon Manx managed to pull of such an incredible feat of penmanship in so little pages blows me away. This book will rip your heart out – beware! I’ll confess I actually shed tears, yes in a horror book! The first story was quite literally the best horror story I have read all year (and probably for several years prior). I’m not going to give any plot summaries or elements, just read it blind. It’s quick to read, so you won’t feel bad dropping your current read for this one.

I intended to write my review immediately after but life happened and so now it’s a week later. I can say though that it is still sitting with me. I want to re-read it but I know I won’t get the same feeling as I know what’s coming now. This is one of those books you want to erase your memory so you can enjoy it again a second time.

I’ve since gone on and read a few of his other short stories and while I’ll admit I preferred this one, I am already sold on Daemon Manx as a future auto-buy author.

If you’re on the fence about this one, let this review be your nudge to try out a new author, like me you might just find something special.

I really enjoyed the title story in this book. I thought Piece by Piece was a really engaging story and some of the scenes really came alive for me. Definitely not a shocking or in your face type of horror...but it really worked for me and was a nice quick read.

There is a second short story included with this one titled The Widower. I thought that one was just ok. It's definitely more or a standard horror tale. Good...but not something I needed or anything that will be memorable. But it was a nice little add on that I wasn't expecting.

"Sometimes all it takes is perspective to appreciate the simple things, or a little extra concern for the frailty of the present moment to fully understand what makes life worth living."

What would you do if you were told the year you were going to die?

The year is 1988 when Bobby is invited to sit with three young girls. At the age of just 11 years old the invitation was too enticing to resist. The girls are preparing to use a Ouija Board to talk to their grandfather, Mac. Bobby is given a message that he has a purpose and that he must fulfill it the same year he is going to die. The years drift by, life has been lived, and the time has come.

Be still my heart, this story was amazing in so many ways. The beauty in the writing reaches out and takes a hold, threading its way through the heart and soul. This one is going on my extra special list!

There is a second story included called 'The Widower'. A grieving widow, a horrific creature, bits of painful moments and grossly entertaining. A definite horror thrill!
