Had this one on my bedside table since late 2022 and finally read in early 2025. Some really good stories within but way too long, I was skimming the last 150 pages.

The information found here, presented in this fashion, was so much better to read than the encyclopedia format. Despite it reading like a history book (with slow moments to match), many parts of it were really engrossing, especially during Jaehaerys’s reign and the Dance. How Martin managed to build a dynastic history so thoroughly in his fictional world is a testament to his world building. Should it be released, I’d gladly read the second half of the Targaryen history.

I loved this big dumb book that exists despite what everyone wants from George Martin. I have much more to say about this book, but I wrote a whole essay about it that's coming out next week, so look for what I have to say over there.

The short of it: George Martin gives us everything.
