3.5: this is just a lore book. I liked a lot of it but some parts of it really dragged. Also if you don’t have a big character chart or family tree for all these families on hand get one. I was able to keep track of all those married into the Targaryen’s or who had children with them but hands or septars from smaller families or at least not families mentioned in the game of thrones show were impossible for me to follow or care about. I found the stuff after the dance of the dragons pretty dull. That being said I loved the stuff prior to the dance of dragons particularly Jaeherys and Alyssane.

DNFing because it reads too much like a history book and I get bored. Made it to page 100

I’m fairly convinced George R R Martin wrote A Song of Ice and Fire in order to get famous enough to get this published. It was generally fun to read (as someone who liked The English and their History), but pretty self-indulgent for sure.

Targaryen’s will always have a special place in my heart…

I actually really loved this book. Sure, I get why people think its boring cuz of how it’s written like a history book but I am a history major so i’m eating this shit up. I will say it definitely got a little boring towards the end but I was still intrigued nonetheless. Glad to finally be done with this monster of a book.

I enjoyed learning about the History of the Targaryen's. Interestingly, this book reads a bit like a history book and as a result, sometimes is a big long winded and dry. I do think the narrator they picked for the audiobook to be hilariously accurate for, in my head, I imagined an older historian recounting this tale to me. Filled with plenty of betrayal, s** and death, the Targaryen's definitely make for an interesting family. Interestingly, the part that coincides with the show so far is but a small portion of this book.

This book, written like a stylised history book, is beautiful. The sketches and drawings illustrating it are really gorgeous, and the style really goes well with the ASOIAF saga. The story (or maybe History) is enthralling, and all the little anecdotes thrown in there only make it more coherent and believable. I really liked my time with the book, and I can only recognise Martin’s creativity. He is for sure one of the greatest story-maker of our time. Now George please stop procrastinating and go back to world, you naughty boi.
