I knoooow that the way this is written, like a history textbook rather than a narrative, isn't everyone's cup of tea but it had me hooked the whole way through.

A fanastical exploration of how a dynasty is created, its rise to glory and dominance, and how it collapses. A page turner to the very end and the unexpected will happen , as per usual in the Game of Thrones universe.

SpoilerFinishing this right before season 2 of House of the Dragon. The story was excellent, but the speed of the story made it difficult to keep up with some of the names. I enjoyed the multiple accounts of the story, allowing the reader to decide what was the most plausible scenario.

This one was a bit tough to get through since it definitely read more like a history recounting than your typical ASOIAF novel, though it had some highlights. I SHOULDN'T count that against it since it makes no secret of being a retelling, but it was more often a slog than it wasn't. I picked it up in hopes of using it for theory-crafting fodder, and to be able to wink back when they reference some of the history within. I didn't find it entertaining enough for it to have been worth my time if there's not at least a few seed payoffs from Fire and Blood in the future in the mainline series. A couple smaller notes: 1. There are some conflicts with what we know from ASOIAF core that I need to research and won't get into here. 2. The ending was very abrupt. If I hadn't seen that I only had 5 mins left on my audio I would have had no clue we were about done.
