This one was a bit tough to get through since it definitely read more like a history recounting than your typical ASOIAF novel, though it had some highlights. I SHOULDN'T count that against it since it makes no secret of being a retelling, but it was more often a slog than it wasn't. I picked it up in hopes of using it for theory-crafting fodder, and to be able to wink back when they reference some of the history within. I didn't find it entertaining enough for it to have been worth my time if there's not at least a few seed payoffs from Fire and Blood in the future in the mainline series. A couple smaller notes: 1. There are some conflicts with what we know from ASOIAF core that I need to research and won't get into here. 2. The ending was very abrupt. If I hadn't seen that I only had 5 mins left on my audio I would have had no clue we were about done.

Great, magnificent book. Even if it could have been finished without the last 30 - 50 pages or so.
But at the same time this sucks because now I have 2 books I’m waiting George to finish.

Not bad, interesting read if you like the game of thrones universe but it reads like a history book so it’s a bit dense

4 stars. I would have enjoyed this more if the book i read right before it werent also talking in the past tense. It truly feels like a history book a noble would read in their studies of the Targaryen dynasty. Being written as a history book it feels kind of dry at times and im not getting as invested as i would if it were written in the present tense. Im looking forward to reading something speaking of the present now. That being said I did really enjoy this book. I have watched GoT and all thats out of House of The Dragon at the moment so Im also looking forward to how the HoTD makers will interpret the future happenings. Some crazy stuff happens and theyre making Rhaenyra the main character of sorts and well, she dies so idk if theyll end the show there or not. I would love to see onwards from Rhaes death as well but we’ll have to see.
I picked this up after watching House of the Dragon (after watching all of GoT years ago). This was an interesting prologue to the GoT series, but it's not for everyone. The writing style is much different than ASOIAF books and does in fact read more like a history book. It took me much longer to read than books of similar length because of the writing style. However, there are some funny gems in here and interesting tidbits.
