Family are the people you choose and who choose you in return. You also don’t realize the impact you have had on your found family until it is too late. This is not the first time a translated work has made me weep and realize that Americans really don’t have a great grasp on mental health, but it might be the first time a cat’s internal monologue made all of that happen.

Loved every bit of this. A beautiful love story between a cat and his person as well as a tribute to all the friendships we have throughout our lives and how they shape us, told from the perspective of a very witty, sarcastic, and charming kitty. Heartwarming, funny, and a definite tear jerker.

I don’t think I was prepared for the emotional storm this book would bring. The Travelling Cat Chronicles is one of those rare stories that quietly sneaks up on you — and then completely wrecks you in the best possible way. I was in the middle of a park when I finished it, and I don’t mean a couple of polite tears. I mean full-on, can't-see-the-pages-through-the-tears, ugly crying.
Told from the point of view of a clever, proud, and deeply loyal stray cat named Nana, the story begins on the hood of a silver van — the first place he meets his human, Satoru. It’s a simple beginning, but from that moment, their bond is sealed in the quiet, unspoken way that only animals and their people can understand.
What follows is a journey — both literal and emotional — as Satoru and Nana travel across Japan, visiting old friends from Satoru’s past. Each stop reveals more about Satoru’s life, the people who shaped him, and the quiet generosity of his spirit. Along the way, Nana sees the world from car windows and meets a colorful cast of characters, both human and animal. For him, everything is new. For us, everything becomes deeper.
But this isn’t just a travelogue — it’s a meditation on love, friendship, sacrifice, and the fleeting nature of time. Nana may be a cat, but his voice is tender, sarcastic, wise, and achingly real. His love for Satoru is unshakable. Their bond is the heart of the story, and it beats louder with every chapter.
This is not just a book for cat lovers — it’s a book for anyone who’s ever loved and had to let go. Anyone who understands that sometimes, the purest form of love is the one that doesn’t ask for anything in return.
The Travelling Cat Chronicles will make you smile, it will make you laugh, and yes — it will break your heart. But in the best, most beautiful way. It’s a quiet masterpiece, and one I’ll carry with me for a long time.
Read it. Just... maybe not in public.
