I loved this book. The day-to-day storytelling pulls you into the FMC’s world, letting you experience her dark, brutal life through her eyes. It’s raw, immersive, and unapologetically bleak. There’s no sugarcoating, no sunshine, and no rainbows. Just survival and trauma, laid bare.
The pacing is unique—it slowly reveals the main story when you’re already in too deep. Some twists are predictable, but that doesn’t take away from their impact. Every moment hits hard, and you can’t help but feel the weight of her struggle.
The FMC is a grumpy, unreliable narrator carrying the scars of her reality. She stumbles into a found family, faces her dark past, learns to use her powers for good, and slowly gets won over by the most lovable, persistent sunshine golden retriever of a man I’ve ever read.
This story wrecked me in the best way. I’ll be diving into book two immediately. But let me be clear: this is not a happy, feel-good read. This is a story about trauma, and you will feel every bit of it.
Anyway, go read it. It made me so sad I cried and so mad I threw my Kindle. I want you to feel my suffering! But also… 🥺 why, Speer? How could you?

This is an absolutely beautiful book. I… will try writing more when my heart isn’t absolutely shattered. But I can definitely say this was one of my favorite books of the year!

This book was SO good! I cried so many times! And the ending?? I need to start book 2 immediately. Highly recommend!
WOW! I'm blown away that this is a debut novel. Her writing style and this world she's created is immersive and deliciously binge-able. I'm telling you, I was hooked from page one and had to force myself to put this down at 2am, or else I would have gone all night to finish. This is so well-paced, well-executed, visceral, and heart. WRENCHING.
It's a dystopian, paranormal story with warring gangs / groups. Our fmc Bones (love that) can magically heal people with a mysterious power, making her an extremely valuable asset and the story is told through her POV. There is no real magic system here (some mentions of gods but nothing further yet) and no complicated world-building; you are dropped right into the action. You're immediately drawn into Bones' story, and damn does this girl have a rough, complicated past. Life has not been kind to her, and she is a hardened, lonely soul, driven solely by the need to survive. I don't want to ruin it too much, but there's amazing found-family, slooooow burn romance, grumpy/sunshine, and def some SA & mental health triggers.
Be prepared for some real heartbreak, and a cliffhanger that will leave you screaming. I need book 2!!
