Holy crap! What a book! This book took me by surprise. I always go in blind, and barely ever read the synopsis, but this one really did a good one on me. I loved the character growth the female main character had despite her being a bit too self-deprecating at times.
This book gave me The Walking Dead/The Last of Us vibes minus the zombies. There’s lots of suffering, an incredible amount of injustice, and major trigger warnings you all should read before diving in. Overall, I was blown away by this post apocalyptic story, even though the twist at the end left me heartbroken. I cannot wait for book 2!

I cried ... a lot... I'm at a loss... just why?
You can find this review of Bones on my blog, Heart's Content!
A big shout-out and thank you to the author for the complimentary copy they provided in exchange for an honest review.
So, here’s the truth. I may be the book blogger/bookstagrammer, but my best friend often finds ways to one-up me on finding and recommending books to me.
That’s how Bones found me. I wake up one day to see a message from my best friend on Instagram. Well, you can’t call it a “message”. She’d just sent me the post the author had put up about ARC reviewer sign ups. I had to take the hint from her instruction, clearly. So I checked out the book and initially hesitated. I loved when an author has trigger warnings posted along with the sign-ups and after reading them, I was initially worried about one or two of them. But something had me going back to the sign up a time or two and I went with my instinct and signed up.
To my surprise, I had checked my Kindle about another book I was expecting to receive and found Bones sitting there, quietly. I think it was pretty representative of how the book would be in my life. An unexpected presence and a quiet undeniable feeling that stays with me.
There’s a lot about Bones that just works! Be it the emotion packed into every line of the book, the surprises that come at unexpected moments, the devastation, gestures of kindness and family, or the gritty setting with a bleak future filled with actions of hope and love. All of it works.
There were some very poignant moments in this book that stay with you until the end, as the reasons for them keep unravelling. The writing is thus, probably the biggest, most powerful pillar holding Bones up. Choppy, fluid or turbulent, the writing takes the form of whatever emotion Speer designs and flows evenly throughout. The pace entwined with the writing stays unchanged and steady throughout, except in the last maybe 20% that raced by for me.
There is clearly a very deep plot that goes beyond what we see on the pages of the first book in this post-apocalyptic romantasy. Bones sets up the foundation, emotional introduction to and basic backstory of the characters, the world and the basic plot conflict with a hint of something bigger looming. As many plot knots that are unravelled in this book, that many more appear beneath them that seem more complex and dangerous and I can’t wait to see what Speer is going to do with this series.
The world-building is very straightforward and at the same time in cahoots with the writing and plot, so expect to completely understand what Speer reveals and know there’s more than you see. As a reader, I kept with the telling and unravelling of Bones’s world throughout and have absolutely no complaints.
Speer brings a lot of personality to the book through the primary and secondary characters she introduces almost all at once. We get to know each and every one of them at the same time we get to know the FMC, Bones. It’s so interesting to me how much we know about Bones without knowing something very vital about her until the very last page. I love what the author has done with bringing the characters together, tearing them apart and healing them whole again.
This book is set in a dystopian world. I do not recommend stepping into this book without knowing what you’re walking into. As well as Speer handles all the content, it’s also a heavy, sometimes dark and difficult read. Yes, there’s lots of hope, love and support; but please check out the content warnings before reading Bones.
Five stars. A happy happy reading!

This book just wasn’t for me - the blurb that I read originally was very vague and I was not ready for just how dark and emotionally heavy this book was. In fairness to the author I can say the book, specifically characters, are well written. Discounting the content info I missed that boils down to personal preference (ie spice, expletives, sa), there was one thing I do take issue with. The extreme lack of world-building, having read the book I still know next to nothing about the world. In the end, if you’re a person who likes dark romance and is not concerned with trigger warnings - I would still recommend this book.
Holy crap I LOVED this!! It tore my heart out and made me ugly cry, but I would absolutely go through it all again. Can’t wait for the next book!
I broke my New Year’s book buying ban to purchase this book back in January and from page 1 I couldn’t put it down. Bones is a post apocalyptic fantasy with a dark, suspenseful twist. (Please read trigger warnings, friends
I’m not sure if I have the words to describe how heart-wrenching and beautiful this post-apocalyptic romantasy novel is…
The storytelling from our main character’s (Bones) POV illustrates the struggles of trust and trauma/PTSD in a post-apocalyptic world. The character development is quite beautiful from the dialogue to the character mannerisms - the characters truly feel like real people.
This novel is very dark but well balanced with many light moments between characters. The romance is slow burn, touch her and die, one bed, and forced proximity.
K.L. Speer had me on an emotional roller coaster throughout the whole book - I cried, laughed, smiled, and felt anger for the characters.
Thank you so much K.L. Speer releasing this heart-wrenching, but beautiful novel. I can’t wait to read book two, Fangs!

Bones by K.L. Speer is a dark, emotional, and heartbreaking post-apocalyptic romance with some fantasy elements and a touch of spice.
The story follows Bones, she has the power of healing. This power has been a blessing and a curse for her throughout her life. She has been abused and taken advantage of because of it. This has made her untrusting toward others. Seeing Bones find people who care about her and her wellbeing was beautiful to read. Bones has been through a lot. She does make some questionable choices and definitely self sabotages, but she is human and I loved that K.L. Speer made a protagonist who has flaws and is not perfect. Trent, who is the love interest, is the perfect foil to Bones. While Bones is grumpy and closed off, Trent is sunshine and open. He slowly chips away at Bones' hard exterior. When he calls her "darlin" I absolutely melted.( He also does some other cute things, but I do not want to spoil it.)
Reader be warned this book is dark and Bones goes through some heartbreaking things. You will absolutely hurt for her and you will cry!! This book does end on a cliffhanger!
