The Read-Aloud Family: Making Meaningful and Lasting Connections with Your Kids

An easy-to-read appeal to read aloud as a family from days in utero until the kids leave the house, as well as the positive impacts that can come from it. The detailed book lists at the end give plenty of options on where to start or continue.
Excellent, enjoyable, and extremely useful, primarily because of Mackenzie's extensive lists of recommendations for each age range, all of which sound like great reads. I confess, I borrowed this from the library because I wasn't sure it would be worth the purchase price, but it definitely is--so much so that I'll be putting it on my wish list, even though I've read it already ... and even if I did find myself feeling sort of grumpy and slightly resentful that I have to do other things and can't just read aloud to my kids all day every day.
This book really solidified my view of the importance of reading together as a family. We are always reading and I really enjoyed Sarah Mackenzie's take on this subject. I love her podcast and the read aloud revival book lists.
I love this podcast (Read-Aloud Revival) and the book did not disappoint. As a mom who loves reading and loves sharing books with my kids, I feel all the more inspired and motivated to continue reading aloud to them as they grow older. This book is full of encouragement and fantastic tips, along with lots of book suggestions. I took LOTS of notes and my library list grew! Can’t wait to dive in.
Sadly just seems to be an outlet for the author to push Christianity while also discussing books.
Some parts of this book felt redundant if you’ve read the read aloud handbook by Jim Trelease but the rest I thought was really great! I feel the read aloud handbook is to convince you of the benefits of reading to your kids and this book is how to actually do it in real life as a busy mom. She had good tips on how to occupy your kids while reading and what realistic expectations we should have for the experience. I also like her suggestions on what questions to ask your kids after finishing the book.
Nothing truly ground breaking for me in here, but it was a good reminder to keep reading to my kids, and there were a lot of great book suggestions I noted down.
Love it!
What a fun book! I love the recommendations and am excited to start integrating them into our family story time.

This is a fabulous resource for parents wanting to encourage a positive reading environment at home. Sarah provides fantastic recommendations and backs her suggestions with research and personal experience. I especially found the chapter “Ask compelling questions” to be helpful. Many of these were familiar and I was already asking, but it was nice to have them all in one place and see specific examples. This book definitely has me excited to continue reading aloud with my children throughout their childhoods. It also reminds me to encourage parents of older children to not stop reading aloud once their children can read on their own.
