Reunited and it feels so good? Not necessarily so for Ezra and Frankie after a bad breakup 10 years ago. In The Rewind by Allison Winn Scotch, the former couple meet up at their mutual college friends' wedding at the small college in Western Massachusetts that they both attended. Ezra is a serious guy, ready to propose to his current girlfriend on New Year's Eve 1999, the dawn of a new millennium. Frankie is a rock star manager, used to a take-off-and-leave existence. Can they at least get along as friends?

When I began reading this novel, I was under the mistaken impression that this was a time-travel novel where both characters go back to 1999 and correct the mistakes that led to their untimely breakup. But the book actually takes place in 1999 on New Year's Eve.

I didn't really get a feel for 1999 that much, especially since the music brought up during the book was strictly 1980s. Although the characters talk about Y2K very briefly, and one character just created an online dating platform that strikes most of the characters as weird, it felt like the book could have happened at any time. Maybe that would have been better.

Also, I did not sense any true chemistry between the two main characters. Most of the secondary players like Ezra's friend Gregory and his current girlfriend Mimi stood out but most were very interchangeable that they did not feel important at all.

While I love hearing the back story about the characters, it wasn't necessarily shown but added to descriptions of the characters when they were doing other things. Sometimes, the paragraphs were bogged down with those snippets of character studies.

I really loved the idea of a scavenger hunt. I wanted to see/hear/read more about that than the quest for Ezra and Frankie to find out why they may be engaged and ended up in the same bed.

The story was a good premise, but I really wished it had been a time-travel novel. It would have worked better, I think. I felt that some passages dragged on despite some of the outlandish events that occurred before they ended up waking up together. I really wanted to like this book because the cover is gorgeous, but it was slow in some places. Plus, I may have been stuck on that time-travel aspect as well. Maybe it's because the title sounds like it should be in that genre.

Unfortunately, it's hit or miss for me with this author's books, but I'm sure I'll want to read her next one because I do like her writing and have been following her career since she wrote for Glamour magazine years ago. There's even a hint about what her next novel will be about at the end of the book.

I loved the concept of this story but found it hard to keep up with the flashback versus present timeline scenes. Still, I liked how the mystery was uncovered over time and the characters were able to resolve old issues.

What a waste of my time! Blurb was totally misleading. Just a couple of adults who dislike each other very much, trying to figure out if they're married or not--one is concussed, the other is drunk! Decided they want to be together in the last several pages in the most unromantic way.
