DID NOT FINISH: 49%

DNF @ 49%. The first 25% had me hooked, but it quickly fizzled out. It was repetitive and the plot wasn’t moving along. For being 12 hours in, the story should be further along.
slow-paced
Loveable characters: No

Wanted to like this book so badly, but the writing was sub par, the plot had no movement (and oftentimes the underwhelming, borderline abusive relationship between the FMC and MMC made it cringey), and world building was practically nonexistent. I love a pushy, broody MMC as much as the next gal, but this one felt underdeveloped and the abusive interactions were not as sexy as Roehrich was probably going for :(

I rage read this book. Why 5* then? Because I felt a shit ton of emotions.
The negative reviews are absolutely right, this book is 700 pages of abuse.
And I don't even have a but to justify it.

All characters are doing shit, no one is perfect, they all have flaws some more than others.

SPOILERS ahead

I didn't like the FMC. I hope book 2 explains a bit why she is the way she is. Its nut just the mishandling she went through as a child, she just is how she is. The thing I don't understand is how she acts appealed at everything that is expected of her. Obviously the way fae are treated is not okay but she should know. She acts surprised at every turn but she should have been tought that the Legacy are the faes "better". She drops to her knees in front of Theon as soon as she realizes what he is. So she knows. But why is she acting like she expects equal rights?
And what were her plans for the future? Theon asks that and she doesn't really answer it. What are they teaching fae children will happen after the Selection?
I really wish to understand her thinking because its such an integral part of the whole story. Her whole defiance is based on Theon stealing her future. But the time with her friends was running out anyway.
I honestly grew a bit frustrated at her because it often times felt like she didn't even consider trying. I get failing but refusing to try is another story.
Doesn't justfiy the abuse she experienced but girl at least try to try.

Theon reacted wrong in so many situations. But honestly faced with someone utterly unpredictable, I can understand some of it. Not the abuse, but his frustration. He tried so many different ways and she didn't even try half of the time.

Girl please use contractions more the formal style of writing is taking me out but I enjoy the characters and Tessa is a very interesting FMC and the way her emotions are written are breaking me heart

I read this book on a whim and I’m glad I did l. I honestly can’t wait for the second book because I felt the story was just beginning and then bam and it ends and leaves us on a cliffhanger.

Tessa is a strong willed heroine albeit whining because let’s be honest she was constantly throwing herself a pity party. I admire the patience Theon had when it came to her because he was always nice and caring and had to show tough love when necessary.

As a side note, if you’re going to read it keep in mind it does have similarities to ACOTAR.
