i wasn't sure what to expect from this, but overall i liked it. zweig's writing is quite rambly and maximalist. going from steinbeck straight into this gave me whiplash. but it culminated in an ending that felt weirdly satisfying cause it just made sense. not sure i'd read another by him; i think i'm a bigger fan of sparse, simplistic writing (cough cough steinbeck). but it's been on my tbr for a while so i'm glad i read it.

Wonderfully simple and elegant in the storyline and exquisitely eloquent in its writing, this will probably stay with me for quite a while
