Prepare for a crying book: TW: death of a parent (prior to book starting), past drug use of a parent, family guardianship, alcoholism, child abuse (verbal and physical), homelessness, school shootings/violence

This book gave me all the feels, I didn’t know much going in except for that someone I trusted had recommended and it was MG so I could include my kids. They loved the formatting of it, the way that each character had a distinct voice and type of chapter, and it’s nice to get them interested in a contemporary when they normally prefer SFF/horror or animal protagonists. I was not prepared for just how intensely sad it made me and how triggering it was. Really well written and interesting though, and I’d recommend it if you’re in a good headspace for it.

calvin and hannah are two very different young people and they relate their perspectives on these events in wholly unique ways. this was absolutely beautiful. the real-life truths that surround families: incarceration, blended families, abuse, death, addiction. another outstanding novel-in-verse for middle grade readers !!!
