Sylvia’s big sister Persephone is murdered and the case has gone cold. Sylvie thinks it’s her sisters no good boyfriend Ben, who is also the mayors son but he’s never charged with her murder. Sylvie is 30 now and came back home to take care of her mom who now has cancer.

This book was a great read! From beginning to end. I could not put this down, even while at work I couldn’t. I just wished they had added a more of what happened after they solved the murder. Definitely recommend this book

4.5 stars- so good. Review to come.

The disappearing sister isn't a new idea, but this one still felt fresh. It was a quick, easy read - it definitely has a darker, (gothic?) more somber feel, which worked for the novel. Definitely did not have this one figured out, which I always appreciate. I'd recommend this one if you're looking for a dark mystery.

I would give this a 4.5 (rounded up) ! Read this in one sitting. The couple things I didnt like...some of the material seemed redundant....like toward the end after the plot twists you kinda just wanted a nice transition into the conclusion...but it dragged a bit. Even though I got frustrated with some characters, that's what made them real. Really enjoyed. Kept my interest throughout. Liked how the mystery progressed and the raw emotions.

THE WINTER SISTER BY MEGAN COLLINS BOOK REVIEW
Estranged family members, a cold case murder & a main character racked with guilt make up this domestic thriller from Megan Collins.

RETURNING HOME WITH PLENTY OF BAGGAGE
The set-up of this story is fantastic. Immediately Megan Collins throws readers headfirst into a tumultuous home environment. Sylvie’s older sister, Persephone, is not making the best choices. She’s sneaking out, lying to her family & covering up secrets. The truth is, Persephone has no choice. Their mom, Annie, is a total mess. Annie is passive aggressive, overbearing & an alcoholic. After Persephone is found dead, Annie spins out of control & their family is torn apart.

Years later, Sylvie is pulled back into her mother’s web. Consumed with guilt, she’s back home to take care of her ill mother. Megan does a great job here balancing the strained mother-daughter relationship with the added caregiver role played by Sylvie. Both women have secrets, anger & resentment but yet, here they are muddling through the mess together.

DEBUT DRAMATIC SUSPENSE
This is not a twisty type of thriller, but rather procedural in nature. Readers come along as Sylvie digs up clues from the past. She is determined to find out exactly what happened that night. As she becomes close to the truth, the story builds nicely. This is where Megan Collins really shines.

THE VERDICT
I am Into This book. At the heart of the story for me is love, healing & forgiveness. While The Winter Sister deals with some heavy subject matter, Megan’s writing style carries the narrative well. Read this if you’re in the mood for a lighter psychological thriller that wraps up nicely at the end.

There is one huge part of this book that reminds me of The Winters by Lisa Gabriele. Have you read it?

I had to give it a 4 although I had a really hard time getting through the beginning. I was considering putting it aside and went and read some reviews that said to stick with it.

I'm glad I finished! I ended up really engaged with a number of characters. There were some things that were not surprises and others that were. Mostly it was a good dive into relationships and love.

It seems like everyone is feeling the guilt over Persephone's death. Each blaming themselves and each other for the role they may have played in her murder.

Persephone's mom, Annie turned into an alcoholic that shut herself off from the rest of the world. She refuses to communicate with anyone, even her own daughter Sylvie. Is the sudden change in Annie’s health, the wakeup call she needs in order to repair her fragile family?

Sylvie, Persephone’s sister, blames herself for what happened to Persephone that night. And because of that belief, she lives under the weight of that guilt every single day to the point where she's just coasting through life not really enjoying it. But then again, she thinks she shouldn't really get the chance to enjoy her life.

Persephone's boyfriend Ben's life is on an upswing. He's a nurse now and helps cancer patients. During the course of the story I began to wonder how much of an interest does Ben really have in nursing. Is he trying to make amends for past wrongs? Is it because he feels guilty over what happened to Persephone all those years ago? Is it because he murdered Persephone and he feels like this is atonement for him? The author had me questioning almost everyone’s motives.

The Winter Sister surprised me. It's a story that drew me in page by page until the next thing I knew, I was fully ensconced in it...in the lives of Sylvie, Annie, Ben, and of course Persephone. I had to know what secrets they were keeping and what really happened the night that Persephone went missing. The author, Megan Collins does a great job of weaving these characters stories together and creating a suspenseful yet emotionally complex story that tugs at your heartstrings and makes you want to keep reading until you finish the whole book. And that is exactly what happened to me. I read this book in one day and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I look forward to seeing what this author writes next.

I am really torn about this book. Up until the end of chapter 24, I would have said this book was a solid four stars, but after all I could think is why did the author have to go there?!?
