I do love Cole's writing, and the nerdiness of this book was awesome. The characters and the world building were lovely. I thought the ending happened a little quickly, so I wish the author had stretched out a little there. I feel the need to warn that rape happens during the course of this story, which surprised me, so I don't want it to surprise other readers.
CW sexual assault. It made the second half of the book really difficult for me to read.
Jang-wan and Mykhail set off to find Mykhail's former professor and possibly the only person who might have been prepared for the solar event that has thrown the world back to the dark ages. But what they find when they find him is not at all the situation they expected.
I really wanted to like this book and really enjoyed the start, but it was very uneven and weirdly paced. Full review to come

Even though I found Radio Silence lacking, I wanted to try John's book. And sure, this kept my attention better than the first, mostly because it was more action. Parts of it were awful, with violence and rape and human greed, more what I expected from a post-apocalyptic story.
Anyway, it's a insta-attraction moment between John and Mykhail, which you know I'm never in the mood for. But it's a short story, so sure. The two of them had some chemistry, at least.
If you're looking for a quick read without too much layers, you can try this one.

Good unique queer romance. Don't listen to the audiobook. It's read by a woman and it just doesn't work.

Following Gabriel’s brother, John, and astrophysicist student, Mykhail, as they fall in love and figure out what’s happening with the blackout. In book 1, we stayed in a secluded cabin closely watching Arden and Gabriel’s romance. It felt intimated and emotional, as Arden was dealing with the guilt of leaving her parents behind. In book 2, we have a very different tone, I guess. It’s still set in this post-apocalyptic world, but now the characters are interested in finding out what’s happening. When Mykhail appears in the family’s cabin, John feels an instant attraction. Mostly because it’s a new face in the house, but also, because Mykhail is kind and smart and he has a mission. So they go together to Mykhail’s university, growing closer in the journey and finding out a terrible evil plot.
This was a very meh story, almost crossing the line to bad. I wasn’t really into the romance at all, I found it very boring and frustrating. The world-building was meh, not like I was super interested in what was happening. But the romance was not great, they fall for each other so quickly and Big Fight and the conflict, and the book ends so abruptly with this epilogue that didn’t feel earned.
It’s weird because I love Alyssa’s books with my whole heart but this BOOK. Ugh. Like it was so short and it wanted to do so much, there were was an amount of violence that left me sick to my stomach. It was a gay romance with a love interest coming to terms with his sexuality, a post-apocalyptic novella with political intrigued? I hated the way the story mentions sexual assault in the side, casually, like it means nothing, almost a plot point? I don’t know, it came out of nowhere and it felt terrible.
Characters don’t even have time to process what it’s happening to them, instead, we have these supposedly emotional conversations that didn’t resolve anything? because they should have talked more? Oh yeah, this book has a lot of miscommunication, too.
Conclusion, I didn’t care one bit for the romance, the plot was boring and I’m not sure I want to finish this series. Listen, I still love Alyssa Cole and all her beautiful words, but this SF series is not for me.

Still not keen on the insta-love, and there was an ableist smack right in the middle; otherwise not bad.
John and his family are living the best post-apocalyptic life that they can when a hot astrophysicist tries to steal from their garden. Fluff and angst and mystery ensue. Technically a book 2 but I didn't find book 1 was necessary to understand
Nothing at all has happened in the first half of the book...maybe I will return to it later.
