3.8 stars, honestly I think the next book is gonna be a banger because this was really more of a set up and contextual book. Also I highlighted all the words I had to look up starting on chapter 29 and I highlighted 38 words, so I feel like reading smut totally makes you smarter

I made it to chapter 8 and honestly I can't really pinpoint one particular reason for it not finishing but I didn't connect with the story or the characters but more than that something just felt off about it. It's very plain to see that the prince just felt slimy and shady AF and she was just so devoted and in love with him and was just kind of disgusting

Memorable Quotes:
“I live; you dream. Because dreams are safe and life….well, life isn’t.”
“Insults may roll off our round ears, but they also trickle inside and round other parts of us. I will not be rounded.”
“That you, little bird, belong to the sky. And that sky belongs to me.”

- Great book! The world building is a little tricky to figure out at first, and I wasn’t sure where all the landmarks coincided. It also took a little bit to find out what what was going to change and kick start the story. But as you get further into the book it all starts to make more sense. I’m not a fan of Dante, dislike him A LOT. Fallon, I feel for her, she’s so head over heels for Dante, and NO ONE tells her anything other than cryptic words/sayings so I do see her frustration. Her mother isn’t able to explain anything further to her, and her grandmother just shushes her into obedience thinking that will keep her safe. But there is clearly more going on than just Fallon needing to find and free the 5 crows. I do hate she seems to be more left in the dark. But I did enjoy the story and the fantasy is there. Would recommend.

I felt this story had some great ideas but overall had poor execution and if given a few more good edits and rework of plot points, could’ve been a successful series to grab attention. You’re introduced to about 13 characters within the first 5 chapters and yes, you do want to keep track of them. I also felt like some of the plot could have been refined further to make Fallon a stronger main character instead of a character with the plot happening to them.

It really saddens me as there feels like there’s great ideas for world building, but with a weak plot, unnecessary characters, and unnecessary filler, this book ultimately was a no go for me.

I would rank this as baby SJM… too predictable to be the queen herself but I liked it enough I think I’ll read the second book. Fallon was so dumb for most of the book but i think that has to do with the fact that since it was her pov i had to hear all her thoughts. In terms of the plot, i felt like it had some inspiration from acotar, tog, and six of crows. The mind speaking was very Rhysand-esque, as was the crow, and Fallon was similar to Feyre (by that i mean she’s dumb and she annoyed me most of the time). The plot itself gave me tog vibes, and the town (specifically where Fallon worked/who she spent her time with/broken household) reminded me of six of crows. ✌
