Meh!

This was a solid three star read for me, but Felicia...DANG! My whole relationship with her came down to "No, she won't. No, she won't really. Damn, she did." There are two big problems that Felicia has to navigate and they both resolve pretty easily in the end, which was a little disappointing. I hate to say it, but in a story like this one I really expected a higher degree of messiness that would need to be painfully cleaned up. Still, I'm glad that I picked this one up and I would very happily read another book by Sadeqa Johnson.

I'm giving this 2 stars for now. I need to digest what I've just read...Review to follow.

6/26/17
Okay, now that I've had the weekend to think about it. I think I'm going to bump this up to a 2.5 stars, because of its readability and the fact that I was engaged with the story. I was not, however, engaged with the characters. I didn't like ANY of the characters in this book, especially the main one.

Throughout this story, I'm following her story and her many secrets and personal relationships. My main issues with this book:

1. No character growth
2. Unnecessary characters
3. Too many things happening to this one person
4. No true background to the other characters in this book
5. No definitive closure with the situations or the main character's relationships with the other characters (so many unanswered questions)

This story had so much potential. I'm just glad that my buddy readers felt the same way I did about the character and her story.

Felicia Lyons seems to have it all - three healthy children, a loving husband, and a busy life juggling the occasional acting gig and stay-at-home motherhood. She's come a long way since a troubled childhood in Philly. Still, Felicia can't help but dreaming of getting away from it all sometimes. Then, suddenly, a blast from her past appears, threatening to upend the life Felicia has so carefully created for herself. Will Felicia be able to save her family and marriage?

This was an interesting and well-written book. Honestly, it was almost too stressful for me to read, which reduced its enjoyment level for me at times. However, it certainly doesn't diminish the writing or the quality of the book - if anything, it was so well-constructed that it made me tense! Felicia is an excellent portrayal of a stressed mother. So often, it seems like books actually gloss over the difficulty of juggling motherhood and life. It will hit home with many parents.

For me, this book rests on some crazy premises - if Felicia and her husband had just *talked* in the beginning, we wouldn't have gone on this whole journey. Still, Johnson does a good job of explaining her Felicia's background, giving us insight into why she's become the person she is today. She's a well-developed and real character, albeit slightly frustrating at times! The ancillary characters are fun and real, especially her grandmother.

Overall, a good read, though just 3/3.5 stars for me personally, because it stressed me out!

(Note: I received an ARC from Netgalley in return for an unbiased review.)

Second House from the Corner is a story of when the ghosts of someone's past haunts their present and threatens their future. Felicia Lyons thinks she wants a way out of her stay at home life raising her three kids and catering to her husband. This is the perfect example of be careful what you wish for. One phone call gives Felicia her out, but not the way she wants it. Felicia is forced to return home to Philadelphia to deal with the ghosts of her past. Second House from the Corner is an great read. Johnson does a wonderful job of speaking the mind of a mother of three and being at witt's end. Second House from the Corner is funny, emotional, suspenseful, and maintains a grip on reality.

I'm so confused about my feelings for this book! I couldn't put it down but I hated Felicia's decision making! The writing is well done so you are drawn into her story and rooting for her even though you want to slap her outside her head!

I would have rated higher except for the ending...it ended so abruptly I thought I was missing pages.
