Parts of this book were very very good. Ian McEwan can draw brilliant characters for us, make them come alive and immerse us in their lives. Other parts for me were too much ‘Ian McEwan’ the intellectual, for example, when his main character is talking about politics all I could hear was his voice rather than Roland’s. Overall it’s a fantastic book.

If you're looking for a book to keep you company, this is the right choice! I struggle to relax after work, and this book helped me concentrate 100% on Roland's life story. It made me happy to read about a non-remarkable life in remarkable times (from the Cuban Missile Crisis to the COVID pandemic
Moderate: Sexual assault, Pandemic/Epidemic
When Roland Baines was 11, he was sent off to boarding school, thousands of miles away from his parents. There, he attracted the attention of his piano teacher. As an adult, Roland’s wife leaves him and their newborn son behind to become an author, and Roland has to figure out life as a single parent.
This story was a rambling mess. Usually, I enjoy stories that jump back and forth in time, but to me, there didn’t seem to be a point for the time jumps in this book. For me, this book just doesn’t hold up to McEwan’s other works.
Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me an audio ARC of this book.

If you are looking for a novel with a f-ed up plot (child sexual molestation) and a cast of entirely unsympathetic or unlikeable characters, this should be your next read. I try McEwan about once a decade, and I always regret it.
