I stumbled over this series when casually glancing through a “what should I read next” utility, which I normally view with something approaching scorn. However, in this discovery I was pleasantly surprised, and suspect I shall be diverted for some time to come. The Mr and Mrs Darcy Mysteries blend two of my favourite genres: Pride and Prejudice fan fiction and mystery. I’m not sure if “fan fiction” is the correct depiction of these works, which imagine the world of a beloved story and its characters beyond the pages of the original, but I think it’s the easiest way to describe them. Here, Darcy and Elizabeth and Bingley and Jane have just been happily wed, and a mystery erupts in the form of Caroline Bingley’s sudden betrothal to the season’s most eligible bachelor. Soon, distressing and eerie things start to happen, and of course it is up to the intrepid Elizabeth Darcy—formerly Bennet—to sort them out. This is a lovely extension of this world, the narrative language lovingly recreates the original without sounding cloying or contrived. A successful beginning!

Devo dire, sinceramente, che lo stile della Bebris non mi è dispiaciuto affatto e nonostante tutto anche l'atmosfera ricreata mi ha ricordato vagamente Jane Austen. I personaggi sono rimasti fedeli agli originali: Elizabeth e Darcy me li ero immaginati proprio così, una coppia innamorata ravvivata sempre da quel pizzico di peperoncino che non fa mai male, tra piccoli litigi e prese in giro sono veramente adorabili; anche tutti gli altri personaggi, compresi quelli che rimangono abbastanza sullo sfondo, sono fedeli al romazno orginale e questo mi ha fatto molto piacere.
Un aspetto che ho proprio apprezzato tanto è stata la scelta della scrittrice di aprire ogni capitolo con citazioni in epigrafe tratte da P&P, quasi per sottolineare ancor più che il romanzo sia un tributo alla Zia Jane.

Tutti aspetti positivi che fino all'ultimo capitolo mi avevano quasi convinta a dare 4 stelline; ma quel quasi è stato puntualmente rovinato dal finale....!!?? O.O
Mio Dio, ma cosa centrava con tutto il resto???!

The first 3/4 of the book was fun. Lightly suspenseful, more of the banter and wittiness (in a more accessible language) that we all love about Pride and Prejudice. Fun to imagine Elizabeth Bennett as an amateur sleuth.

However, the ending was awful. The body didn't appear until page 225. And the story quickly nose dived into a silly story of "ladies' intuition" and magic, which was a sad departure from the sharp-tongued and -minded Elizabeth that draws me to this story.

Non sono mai stata incline a leggere libri i cui personaggi fossero tratti da altre storie, o telefilm; nemmeno le fan-fiction mi hanno mai attirato molto; tuttavia ho amato così tanto Orgoglio e pregiudizio e i suoi personaggi, che quando mi sono ritrovata tra le mani questo suo "sequel", ed ho letto le ottime recensioni sul retro (d'altronde, come avrebbero potuto essere cattive...), non ho saputo resistere.
All'inizio la lettura è stata gradevole; tutto sommato i personaggi erano tratteggiati abbastanza bene; mi è piaciuto soprattutto Mr Collins, anche se la sua è stata una fugace apparizione.
Ad un certo punto, però, la storia ha cominciato a presentare dei risvolti gotici che non mi sono piaciuti per niente... della Austen non rimaneva nulla...
confesso di aver sperato fino alla fine in una spiegazione razionale degli eventi, ma purtroppo non sono stata esaudita. Non ho per niente mandato giù la ridicola questione degli "anelli gemelli" e dei loro poteri, e il "dono" di Elizabeth.
Non si può dire che sia scritto male, o che risulti noioso, ma come fan di Jane Austen, è innegabile che sia stata delusa... (http://iltesorodicarta.blogspot.it/2009/02/orgoglio-e-preveggenza.html)

The idea of turning Darcy and Elizabeth into detectives is a really interesting one. Bebris' style is very true to her source material. It's fun to see the characters in this light. I could've done with a more straightforward detective plot but perhaps the others will be more like that. Either way, I'll continue to read them.
