Angela's Ashes is on my short list of favorite audiobooks.

Frank McCourt narrates the book. There is something extra about an individual that reads a book that he writes. Angela's Ashes is an account of Frank's childhood, to listen to his written words in his own voice is a treasure.

This book reminds me of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. The point of view of the child, the incomplete understandings of the child, the close-knit family, the struggles, poverty and hunger.

"Worse than the ordinary, miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood."

Such good writing.

Ah Mr. McCourt is on my short list of people I would love to meet, especially after watching him on PBS doing a pub crawl show around Ireland. He seems like a man I could share a pint with and hear great stories in an Irish brogue. Ashes broke my heart and made me thankful for everything I have in my life. You don't understand "poor" until you read this. It reminds me of stories my mom told of her parents during the Great Depression, but worse, but thru it all, McCourt remains a charming story-teller not looking for sympathy, but telling a story. As a storyteller myself, I appreciate his straight-forward approach. This book is a gem and one of my faves.

Other people have found this book disturbing, too raw, etc. My perspective: it's real. And amidst the darkness of the Depression and poverty of McCourt's family life, his humor and INCREDIBLE talent remain. In fact, what I appreciate most about the book - more than poignancy, humor, history, general Catholicness - is his literary skill; the narrative is a rapidly flowing river narrative that manages to meander and have purpose at the same time. I think this is a book I'll be coming back to, because the interesting storyline masks masterful skill.

Teacher Man's next!

Just fantastic. I can’t believe it took me 20 years to read this book. Highly recommend on audio, read by the author.

I loved this book the first time I read it but love it even more now having listening to the audio book read by Frank McCourt.

I was bracing myself for a super depressing book. Well, there are sad bits (death, poverty, etc.) but honestly I laughed more than I cried. Frank McCourt does an amazing job narrating the audiobook which may be why I found it so funny. Highly recommend those who read the physical book listen to the audiobook, you will probably have a different experience.
