Such a good read! Frank McCourt's writing style is very interesting; he doesn't put quotation marks around words being spoken, which I found slightly odd, but I got used to it. He tells the heartbreaking tale of his youth, including his drunk father and times of starvation. I've read other memoirs where people discuss their poverty, but none of the family's I've read about were as worse off as the McCourts.

I'm noticing that a lot more women than men gave this book good reviews. Probably because it is so incredibly depressing. Your heart cannot help but break for the victims of alcoholism and extreme poverty.
I probably enjoyed this book because I came from and Irish-Catholic home. I think Frank McCourt does a superb job in pioneering a dialect-it's just how my native Grandfather talked. Although some parts are long-winded and could have been taken out, I still appreciated them. It took me a long time to get through the book; it's not a short read by any means. I think this book shows a voice from a time in history that is overlooked. If you liked this book, I recommend the two sequels, "'Tis" and "Teacher Man".

A very well written book. The childhood in poverty comes out with rare humor and sympathy. I was taken aback by the poverty in Ireland, though I shouldn't have been perhaps.

I loved this book! I remember reading it during the summer of 2006. I don't remember precisely what happened, like detail wise. Frankly I don't remember anything, although I hope to someday read it again. I just remember that it made me cry. It is definitely a MUST read.

Best memoir I've ever heard. The author narrates it himself.

Its difficult to give this novel a fair rating. The fact that this is a personal story of an individual makes it even harder to have an opinion because its their personal story. However, this book was not what i had expected it to be. Although the story was heartbreaking and a tale of courage and overcoming obstacles, i found it difficult to get through. I agree with previous posts that the story became repetitive and frustrating, however Frank's ability to overcome such horrifying circumstances gives the reader hope. Overall, I am glad i read the book, however i am on the fence about whether i would recommend this to others.
