Angela's Ashes

Frank McCourt

3.99 AVERAGE

I'm really surprised that I lasted all the way through this book. Especially since I've got tons of unread books on my shelves that had to have been better than this one. And what's even more surprising is I'm going to read the next two in the trilogy. I started Teacher Man awhile back but put it down. I guess I just keep reading in hopes that something good will actually happen to young Francis McCourt. Angela's Ashes is just chapter after depressing chapter of McCourts baby brothers dying off from malnutrition while his Dad goes off and drinks up all his wages. It's maddening, and yet I kept reading it. Like I said it must have been the desire to see something, anything good happen to the McCourt family. I guess I would suggest reading this book to anyone who thinks their life is bad. Just goes to show you someone's always got it worse than you.

“The master says it’s a glorious thing to die for the Faith and Dad says it’s a glorious thing to die for Ireland and I wonder if there’s anyone in the world who would like us to live. My brothers are dead and my sister is dead and I wonder if they died for Ireland or the Faith.”

what a great memoir. dreary and melancholy and heart wrenching and beautiful. i enjoyed it a lot, even though it took me far too long to read it.

This book is a real eye opener... It's a very Vivid portrayal of the depression in Ireland. I found it to be an interesting read, would most defiantly recommend it if your into history.

A reread of one of my favorites memoirs. Frank McCourt’s childhood still made me cry and laugh at the same time. Today I would be would be rating it a 4.5 stars, but I’ll leave the top rating because this book has a sentimental value to me.
dark emotional reflective sad medium-paced

If I cried over things like books and movies, I would have cried about this one. Hard story to read, amazing that he survived to recount his experiences.
adventurous dark medium-paced
