WELL I told myself I was only gonna read until 11pm and get a good nights rest but here I am instead at 1 am and the book is finished!!! I absolutely loved the first book, and after dnf-ing another book I was super excited to read a book I knew I’d enjoy. I was sucked right back in as soon as I picked it up, and I can’t wait to read the third book. This is an enthusiastic 5 stars from me!!!!

For some reason I liked this book much more than labyrinth lost. We follow the older sister, Lula, as she deals with trauma from being taken and imprisoned in Los Lagos, not able to move on from it her boyfriend decides to end things between them. Thing is, the day he decides this and she uses her magic to try and bring him back an accident occurs that kills and harms everyone in it, including him as he ends up in a coma. She is the only one to awaken and soon decides again that she can't lose him, causing her to go against La Muerte, lady death, and bring upon the city a horrible darkness only she can fix again.

I felt more of the tension in this book, and also thought it was interesting how we got a better glimpse of the world of the Brujas. Having an introduction to the Thorne Hill Alliance and the Lavant Knights. I also thought the link between the sisters was even more obvious and in your face which I loved, a truly good family relationship. And lastly, little Rose, holy shit her power is so cool.

This book in one sentence: Lula and her family are still struggling after the events in book 1 of the series, but after a tragic accident, Lula attempts some forbidden magic and inadvertently creates a zombie army of casi muertos.
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Bruja Born is dark and I say that in the best way possible. Where Labyrinth Lost felt like a fun adventure with Romance, Bruja Born is about a curse and good intentions (and bad judgement). But most of all it is about sisters and their bonds and that is what has drawn me to this series. I couldn't help but compare Lula and Alex while reading especially in the beginning and finding Lula's story slightly lacking in comparison. Lula can be unlikable at times but that's awesome and relatable THIS GIRL'S BEEN TO HELL AND BACK (literally) SO SHE'S ALLOWED TO BE A BIT OF A MESS. Lula and Alex are very different characters with different beliefs and powers and connections to their magic and once I reconciled all that I came to appreciate Lula's journey in its own, different way. Her connection to her deos is beautiful and my favorite part of her story.
The only thing I do wish is that we got more of a sense of who Maks was before he died (not a spoiler it's right there in the description of the book!) because I felt like I never really knew who he was before.
Spoiler Also I know this series is all about the brujas, but I'm really going to need Nova to get his own book.

*Thank you Sourcebooks Fire & NetGalley for the E-Arc copy of this novel.*

When your sister is an all-powerful bruja who sent her entire family to hell so you have to even the scales and raise an army of zombies.

I loved its predecessor, Labryinth Lost, but I think I loved this one even more. So beautiful and magical. And I loved the relationships between the sisters.

Amazing. Didn't realize how much representation matters until I saw myself in the story. Thank you! Waiting for Rose's story.

I was excited to return to the world of the Brooklyn Brujas, and this book did not dissapoint. In Labyrinth Lost, we followed Alex as she journeyed through a dangerous land to save her family. In Bruja Born, we follow Lula as she tries to recover from her time in Los Lagos.

I think my favorite part thing in this book was the dynamics between the three sisters. Since I don't have sisters, I was fascinated with the relationship each sister has with the other and each of them has their distinct personality: Lula has a sharp tongue, Alex is the sarcastic one and Rose is the quiet one with a smart mouth.

We also find out more information about the hierarchies and organisations that run the magical community in New York, which I found a nice addition to the world-building in the story.

Something I didn't like was all the running around that didn't make a lot of sense. Lula is recovering from a mortal wound but she runs all through Manhattan like she was in a marathon. Twice. I also wanted to see more of the relationship between Nova and Alex, and Alex with Rishi. Rishi is too cool a character to be conveniently somewhere else in the story.

I thought the plot was great. The magic system is very well developed and I love that we have Latino families heading our set of main characters. Cordova did an amazing job as always with the magic and gods and everything.

My main complaint is that I didn't hear or feel much difference in Lulas voice from Alex in book 1. I regularly forgot I was reading from Lulas pov until Alex would be mentioned.

I love that family always prevails in these stories. I can't wait for more with the Kingdom of Adas
