This book was... frustrating. It definitely had good intentions, and I respect that. But it was very feminism 101. But feminism 101 for who, that's my question. I read this book for my book club, and it was kind of brought up that this was very... millennial. I think it's largely out of touch regarding the issues young girls face today. The fact that this book was published in 2020 doesn't really ring true to the youth of 2020. For instance, social media should have played a much bigger role. In general, the whole book read as being very performative. Using a predatory sexual assault as an inciting incident, this book wanted to have a conversation about feminism, but did so very ineffectually. I wish they focused on something more specific. This should have been a book that zeroed in on predatory behaviors of teachers and the effect it has on young girls, but instead it was trying to rope in feminist literature nods and attempts at intersectionality discussions. I'd rather it do one thing Well than several things hastily.
Loved, loved, loved this book! Such an important message, yet so sweet. I can't imagine what I'd do if it was me... It got me thinking a lot. And I must express that I'd have loved to have a feminist book club at my school!
I did not expect to read this all in one sitting. Every time I read one of Katie’s books, I just think to myself: gosh dang I wish it were longer. I need to know more. I want to know more.
Anyway. Badass main character. Swoon worthy love interest. Lots of drama. What a win!
