Now there's nothing inherently wrong about this book, but one think just bugged me about it: It was just too easy.
It felt like the author just collected all feminist manifestos she could find on the internet (all valid ofc) and then tried to put them all at once in a fictional empowering book. And really, no quote from @feminist gets left out.
I feel like this book would have been just so much more interesting if instead of straight up telling you its message every second page, showed you different feminist ideas trough for example character development. If the character basically gets their lesson of the story by page 20 and writes a whole article on it, there's not much to interpret there.

mmhhh... finally some good fucking food
This book was absolutely enlightening. It handles the subject really well and explains different topics in such an easily understandable way.
Is this book super complicated? No. Is it the best 'feminist' book out there? Also no. Is it still a great book, especially to start understanding feminism and why it's necessary? Absolutely. This book is aimed towards (younger) teenagers so it's quite understandable that it is not necessarily super complicated and oftentimes certain things are over simplified for the sake of understanding. But it is still such a great (and fast) read. I could have done without the romance but other than that...amazing.
This book is a great introduction to the world of feminist literature and anyone who is interested in such things should at least give it a try.

Having a harder time remembering the specifics but I did like this book-- a quick read. I was initially drawn to it because of the author Candace Bushnell. I didn't love the book Sex and the City but loved the show-- defining moments in my 30s watching and talking about this show. But I did have a love for the Young Carrie books, maybe Carrie Diaries? And I like the show on CW as well.
The rift with the best friend was predicatable. I like how YA female protagonists are not just victims, they are now fighting back, finding their voices... actually have something to teach their audience. I could've used more strong female characters in my YA reading growing up. You don't have to be quiet and not make waves to still be a good girl and successful. The boy, Gray, was too good to be true.

I can’t listen to this girl’s experience being so thoroughly ignored and dismissed
Rules for Being a Girl is honestly the kind of book I wish I had in high school and I really hope gets shared throughout the YA sphere quickly. I say this because most assault/sexual harassment books pretty quickly leap immediately to rape and while that's sadly an important issue that does need to be discussed, it's not always the case with everyone's situations. This book covers sexual harassment in a more subtle, but just as devious way. I like how it shows all manners of manipulations and the different reactions we take. I also loved that it took more of an activist, social justice spin on it rather than making it more of a victim narrator. She's still a survivor no matter how limited their interaction was, but I liked that for the most part it took a different reactionary stance that i think would be so important for young girls to read about. I also think it's a super quick and easy read which is easily digestible. Throwing in a precious boy as well for a little bit of lightness, I really think anyone can enjoy this.
My only issue is I feel like it wrapped up a bit too quickly and it's extremely predictable. I feel like everything was set up so well that I just wanted to live in these moments a little bit longer. But there was really zero fat in this book, it hopped from plot to plot to plot with basically zero breathing room. I don't mind that, but because of it I didn't feel as attached to Marin as I wanted to be. I wish we got to see more of her revelations. I wanted more book club scenes, and more excellent book suggestions, and more time with her sponsor teacher. I wanted more moments like the discussion about how supporting a guy's sport should be no different than a girl, etc. I also wanted more with her friend after they hashed it out and more of the aftermath. I would've loved more articles too. And more Gray, though he's basically perfect so I really can't complain.
Overall though, I think it was a really enjoyable book that tackled important and complex topics in a lighter way that will be more palatable for the younger audience I hope it attracts. I could see this being an incredible discussion book for that, my high school LA teachers, I'm looking at you. Definitely recommend, good, fast read.
