Didn't finish this one. A little too dark for me. I can put up with dark if the characters are really interesting and/or likeable but as these were short stories I couldn't feel enough connection to the characters to make it worthwhile.

Laini Taylor is one of my very favorite authors and I purchase everything she writes. She has an imagination that is wonderful, terrifying and rare, I've not often read books like this. A.G. Howard is another that i feel this way about as well. I loved all 3 stories, and I'm not a short story reader, I usually stay away, very few can pull it off. Like I said, I loved all 3 but the last story, Hatchling, easily could have been a full book had she chosen to go that route. It was strange & a bit morbid but intoxicating and just wow, I truly wish each story was.....more, but I'll take what I can get and all I can get.

Well-written, intriguing short stories from a variety of storytelling places. I like the intersection with the illustrations before each story. I like that they are not necessarily resolved as happily as one might like. I like that they aren't necessarily happy. It does feel a little unpolished, like early work.
Every single short was unique and the illustrations contained within the book are an added bonus that set the scene for each short perfectly
