This a whimsical story of Morrigan Crow who grows up cursed, being blamed for anything bad that happens in her community, all because of what day she was born. She then runs and escapes death into a magical world of Nevermoor. However, it isn’t as simple as just escaping death when she realizes in order to stay in Nevermoor she must be one of nine people to win a competition to join the Wundrous Society. Morrigan, who the only talent she knows she has is to cause destruction, must navigate this competition and this new magical world she had no clue that existed.
Nevermoor is a fun whimsical story, it is action packed and you can truly picture this world that Jessica Townsend built. I loved the character of Morrigan Crow as she is naive about what is happening around her, but so are you as things just continue to develop and learn about Nevermoor and the Wundrous Society. This is a series and I look forward to seeing what else happens in this adventure!

Ginger was an understatement, Morrigan thought, trying to hide her astonishment as the hat came off. Ginger of the Year or King Ginger or Big Gingery President of the Ginger Foundation for the Incurably Ginger would have been more accurate. His mane of bright copper waves could probably have won awards.
I don't really read middle grade books, don't really know why though. Maybe because these never pop up in any recommendations since I mostly read YA/A books? But I am so going to continue with this series and start spreading my reading to middle grade books as well, if they all are going to be like Nevermoor!
Nevermoor was most definitely full of pretty much everything. Morrigan went through a horrible childhood back at the Crow manor, still managing to stay sane and friendly! But she is saved by this ginger man, supposedly to make her life better. But does that truly get better or possibly even worse?
Such a rollercoaster this book, in a good way! I had so many laughs, so many awes as well as some angry and sad feelings as well. I mean this girl! I wish I would have been that way when I was her age. She is such an amazing person.
I really liked all the characters, I would have loved to get into them a little bit more than what I did, but they all were very well made anyway. I mean, THERE IS A GIANT TALKING CAT!! Kind of Alice in Wonderland vibes there but better. I want that cat, nevermind my allergies. I mean that cat could have been the only character besides Morrigan in the book and I would have been happy about it.
Jupiter was a little like weather vane for me. I get it that that's how he is supposed to be for a reason but I still couldn't help but wanting to shake him a little bit! Hawthorne though is my all time favorite okay!? He reminds me so much of my own kids, little troublemakers whom can surprise everyone and be very wise and concentrated if wanted to.
The plot was good and nicely medium paced. Nothing dragged on for too long. Though I did have some times when I was just "whaaaaaaat?" But when I actually use my brain and think about it, it all makes sense. But it is easy to get confused if you're not paying enough attention.
I like it how it keeps surprising. In good ways and bad ways! You know how usually you can be 100% sure that a character will for sure have a happy ending? Well, you cannot be that with Morrigan's fate at all. Am I even sure after finishing the book? I have absolutely no idea.
All in all this book was such a needed and surprisingly awesome change after YA/A fantasy books. Even though Nevermoor keeps you on your toes pretty much all the time, it is not as heavy as older fantasy is. It is also super heartwarming and funny at times.

Nevermoor was an utter delight to read, Morrigan Crow a fabulous protagonist, and her story one that will enchant its readers. Morrigan is a cursed child, blamed for any misfortune that occurs in her vicinity (lived the snarky tone of her draft apology letters) and doomed to die at midnight on her 11th birthday. Instead Jupiter North appears and transports her to Nevermoor where she has to compete against hundreds of other children, all of whom have exceptional talents, for a coveted place in the Wundrous Society. No problem. Except Morrigan has no idea what her talent is and if she fails to win a place she’s likely to end up dead. Wonderfully vivid world building, fabulous storytelling, a suitably villainous villain, great supporting characters, a delightful quirky feel, and plenty of challenges for Morrigan to overcome. And travel by umbrella! My only disappointment was not having any suitably aged children with whom to share the story.

'Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow' by Jessica Townsend is a magical middle grade book that introduces us to a fantastic heroine and an original new world.
Morrigan Crow is cursed to die. Born on Eventide, she is one of the cursed children that bring mayhem to the world around them and always die before they can grow up. But on Morrigan's eleventh birthday, the very day upon which she is supposed to die, she is whisked away to a magical world called Nevermoor by a strange man named Jupiter North. North brings her to the hotel he owns and which will now be her home as she participates in four trials to try and be awarded a place in the Wundrous Society. If she fails to pass these trials and win a place in the Society, she'll be forced to go home and to an unknown fate.
Townsend creates an imaginative world and populates it with varied and complex characters, most of whom you can't help but love. There are giant talking cats, parades full of witches, and a magical hotel with rooms that will capture your fancy. On top of the world, Townsend also populates her book with complex characters. Morrigan is struggling with what she always assumed was her fate while also trying to figure out what her place is in Nevermoor. Jupiter North is enchanting but mysterious. The Wundersmith, the big bad in this world, is lingering at the edge of the story, possibly creating havoc and definitely bringing up lots of questions for both Morrigan and the reader.
This is such a fun book with a world that is easy to fall head over heels for. I can already see lots of threads being woven for later in the series and I can't wait to see where they lead us. I'll be picking up the second book soon as I want to fall back into the creative and engaging world that Townsend has created.
