This book is written in beautiful but restrained language. It has that feeling of a naive / innocent narrator who can observe the beauty of the world around them without being florid. I found this book to be almost perfect.
My only complaint is the last part felt to quick, suddenly the seasons changed and Jamilia and Daniyar had eloped, I would have liked to feel a bit more build up in the autumn too

Not bad. A bit heavy handed at points, but fun to read a book set among the nomadic steppe people of Kyrgyzstan, and written by someone that knows the life intimately

It's quite a simple story and it's not particularly deep, but the descriptions are very vivid and precise. He paints the scene in just a couple of sentences. You can really imagine what it felt like to live in Kyrgyzstan during WW II. (I'd rate it 3.5 if GR allowed half-stars)
