This author always hits the mark for me. While some of her other characters are still my favorites, these two are right up there. Atrius, in particular, I really enjoyed. I loved the dynamic of stoic badass conqueror and tortured soft boy. I really loved the way Sylina and him played off each other. I love the way the conflict played out. Sometimes, when a character is torn between loyalty and love, the indecisiveness and/or hurt feelings can go on too long, but it didn't feel like it did here. I also really loved how we saw a little more of the threads (pun intended) of the Nyaxia world and the series as a whole coming together. It makes me even more excited than I already was to read the second in the Shadowborn duet and eventually the third duology in this series, which I am already eagerly awaiting.

I did enjoy this full-length novel in between story lines in this series. After the last novella, I was a little skeptical about this book. Especially since the cover says, "mortal enemies to monster lovers".

That being said, I loved this "enemies to lovers" take on this book. Usually, authors put as much tension and drawn-out language and drama that is completely eye rolling and childish in a way. Broadbent did NOT do that in this story. Which I completely appreciated. She navigated a mission that goes "wrong" in the eyes of the true monster of the story without having to force the story into the ending she wanted.

Looking forward in getting into the rest of the series!

Carissa's writing will forever be a favorite of mine. It's beautiful without feeling overwritten. I really enjoyed the concept of this book with the religious cult and I really want more Nyaxia books!
