This was really good! I can't believe they killed April like so many other things could have happened...

This book is the third in the Joe Pickett series. I enjoyed the mystery and personal struggle for Joe that this book was centered on. This series is one that I look forward to “visiting” rural Wyoming with every read.

I had wanted to start this series for years now, but I have to admit that the first few books were good, but not great. I thought Joe was a little too hesitant in most situations other heroes would jump right in. He also seemed to react more to situations more than he proactively did things.

To be honest, I was contemplating ending the series in a few more books if it hadn’t picked up. The series just felt tame to me.

But boy did this book change that opinion. Not only did this one have the balls to kill off a family member in jeopardy instead of a last minute save, but it also showed a family friend murdering the bureaucrat responsible for that death. And instead of Joe being conflicted about knowing this fact, he seems okay with it. That’s something book one Joe would’ve never done it. That shows growth in the right direction.

If the series starts pushing towards a grey viewpoint instead of black and white, I’ll definitely by sticking around. This book gives the hope this series will only become nuanced and intricate as it goes on, which speaks for its longevity.

This installment is definitely a milestone.
