In the Joe Pickett series CJ Box manages to tackle environmentalists, endangered species issues, psychopathic killers and in Winter Kill he manages to weave a believable and fast paced story that includes a sociopathic bureaucrat. Box does a nice job of representing the issues that separate the west from the bureaucrats in Washington without making the issues or the bureaucrats look canned and simplistic. The end has an interesting twist that shows Joe Pickett's character to be a bit more complex than one might expect from his first two books. A very enjoyable book.

Winterkill by CJ Box[bc:Winterkill|244100|Winterkill (Joe Pickett, #3)|C.J. Box|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1427388697l/244100._SY75_.jpg|236494]

Joe Pickett is a game warden for the Wyoming National Forest. He lives in a small town called Saddlestring. He lives with his daughters and wife in a small house that all the game warden before him have lived in. Joe hears shots in the mountains and rushes to find out what is happening. He arrives to find Lamar Gardiner loading his gun with cigarettes and dead Elk all around in the beginning of a massive snowstorm. Later, when the snowstorms get worse, Lamar escapes his custody and Joe finds him dead from arrows in his chest. Joe has a feeling that there’s more this murder and investigates. Joe is a lone hero who really doesn’t want to be one. He faces evil and mayhem with cool and sometimes rage that gets him to the end game. Joe Pickett is a character that I have come to love. He sees right among many wrongs. Even in the face of his grief he plans a way out for his grief and helps his wife come out of her depression. If you have read Craig Johnston’s Longmire series, you will love this series. Small towns, murder, and lone heroes have a way of grabbing me at the first page. CJ Box’s Joe Pickett series is a winner for me. I’m starting from the beginning and working my way through the series. I hope Joe Pickett delivers more in the next book!

My least favorite of the series so far. Just too many intensely unpleasant peripheral characters for me. At least most of them didn't survive the book so they won't be returning, but their passing was hardly cathartic.

What a great book! I love the way the author describes the Wyoming setting and Joe Pickett is a great character! I will definitely be reading the rest of the series.

Three books into the series and it's starting to get predictable. Joe does something stupid. Joe gets involved in something where he has no jurisdiction. Joe does something else stupid. Joe and/or his family get hurt. Joe does more stupid things (how does this man still have a job?!?). There's a big showdown. Terrible things happen. Joe wins, kind of, but it's overshadowed by the fallout from his stupidity and/or the ineptitude of those around him (that sheriff man...how does HE still have a job). The plot of this one feels ripped from the headlines, as it is supposed to, and it is well constructed. However, the villains are caricatures and some of the bad things that happen feel like they are just thrown in for shock value. I can't take any more of Joe's stupidity, though, and this will be the last book I read of the series.

Kind of a darker book than the previous ones. This time it was about a murder, a child kidnapping and anti-government compounds (similar to Waco and Ruby Ridge). It was political and dark but a pretty good read.
