The first book I ever read was Hound of the Baskervilles, and now I have read the rest....
The writing is of the era....the view of society/races/classes/sexes are of the era. Despite all of this, I enjoy Sherlock Holmes the character enough to find enjoyment in reading these stories.

Took me a while (a year! When previously I've read 60+ books in a year), but I finally finished off the full collection of original Sherlock Holmes stories. Being such an influence on many modern works of literature, movie, and TV, it would be silly to never experience the genesis of the master detective.
Would have been five stars, because Stephen Fry is a master of audiobooks, but there were some notable instances of overt racism and racist caricature that were deeply offensive and yet uncommented on (the worst offender is The Adventure of the Three Gables, which I decided to skip because it was a little too overtly racist for me to bear).

A lack of well-developed female characters in the stories made it difficult to keep going.
