After almost 3 solid months of reading nothing but Sherlock Holmes, I'm having a hard time leaving 221B Baker Street. One of the most satisfying reading experiences I've ever had, and also one of the most fun. I'll be returning again and again.

After 3 and a half months and 68 hours of audio, I’m done! Some stories were easily 5 stars, some were very forgettable, but overall this is a 5. I loved being in the world and mind of Holmes and Watson, and listening to the mysteries was both exciting and comforting - comforting, I think, because of the distance created by the historical time period, and by the fact that Holmes is essentially never bested. Even when the stories end with a disappointing or tragic air, Holmes and Watson’s wit and compassion shine through. I think that modern adaptations of Sherlock Holmes (particularly the show Sherlock and the RDJ films) don’t capture the fact that Holmes isn’t always brash, rude, and callous. He can be honest and sometimes a little unpleasant, but his compassionate and rule-following nature shine through in the original stories much more than I’ve seen in other media, and I loved it.

I was absolutely loving this series, then I got to Valley of Fear, which is about 3/4s of the way through. They seemed to paint the 'union boss' as the bad guy. They were making anyone who criticized capitalism as evildoers. Then suddenly, a Pinkerton appears and is the hero who saves the day. I then looked up the story and see that Conan Doyle derived his inspiration for this novel in the book from meeting the son of the Founder of the Pinkertons and he wanted to write a story which parallels the Molly Maguires. Yeah....he was way fucking off.
I can understand the lack of understanding, given how history is told from the standpoint of the rich, wealthy, and the upperclass, all while painting the poor as downtrodden savages. But, I just couldn't finish the rest of the works, after seeing Pinkertons being written as good guys. As a union rep, it disgusts me even trying to read the rest.
I gotta do a better job at researching authors/stories, before choosing to read them.
