This is an excellent of a novella that's intended to be a novella- not a novel fragment, not an extended short story, but a novella.
It's also very immersive. Tobias is a strong main character, and I was instantly drawn into his world by his description of the rituals he used to get through his days and I wanted to know more. The author was great making her world feel rich and deep without going into too much overt description. Blackberries left on a stump implied a local belief in the supernatural and that Tobias was involved with it as some sort of protector or mediator. I also loved that keeping a cat was something that Tobias found essential.
The author was subtle in developing the relationship between Henry and Tobias and sketched in just enough for me to know that Tobias had a tragic romantic past and that this would come into play in the future. The ending had darkness but also opened up other new avenues that I'm excited for this author to explore. I love fairy tales and new interpretations of them, and I'm in for the next book.
