Big Gay Green Man energy! And a mystery. Lovely prose, a really evocative story, and a big gay Green Man.

The atmosphere and lore was really everything I want in a book, it just spoke to me completely. This was a very high 4 for me because it's something I will think about a lot moving forward and maybe reread again some day. Will definitely be getting a physical copy!

Silver in the Wood is a deeply atmospheric blend of cozy and dark that really worked for me, even though I can see where the meandering plot and writing might work less well for others. The story follows Tobias, the Wild Man of Greenhollow Forest, whose dangerous past gets dredged up by the new landlord, chatty and scholarly Henry Silver.

As someone who is forever susceptible to the grump/sunshine dynamic, I absolutely adored the interactions between grumpy and quiet Tobias who just wants to take care of the forest and the dryads there and the very amiable, golden retriever Henry whose irrepressible curiosity cannot be contained. I'll admit to being more like Tobias than Henry but it was fun to see them navigate a growing friendship and the implication that there could be more if Tobias can see his way to it outside of his duties to the forest. But that more involved relationship very much takes a back seat to the mystery of the past of both the forest and Tobias himself.

Ultimately what really won me over with this is just how atmospheric it is and how well Emily Tesh makes you feel like you're in the forest with Tobias. I'm a sucker for any story which can make me feel so immersed in the world and that's no different with this one. I also really loved seeing the various dryads and other creatures in the forest and the paranormal elements introduced in the second half have me very intrigued to pick up the second book in the duology.

As a side note, I had the ebook of this on Kindle but I ended up really just listening to the audiobook narration by Matthew Lloyd Davies which was impeccable and had me absolutely hooked.

While I didn't particularly enjoy Emily Tesh's sci-fi story Some Desperate Glory, this novella convinced me to give more of her work a try. I absolutely fell in love with this atmospheric, intriguing twist on folklore and am very much looking forward to more from her.

Perfect old folklore woodsy vibe with truly lovable and memorable characters. Fairytales but grown up and ancient with real danger, but not a lot of gore.

I just get the feeling that Tesh knows and sees this world so well, and I'm drawn right in with her. The "movie" played in my head the whole time and I had a blast. I love the leads, they are wonderful in their own ways. Tender and gracefully told. Amazing how much she does in how few words. Really, really good!

i want to tell everyone about this book. i’m so fascinated with how a novella does it, tell a beautiful story with so few words! it was the perfect amount of fairytale and folklore that i’ve been looking for.

A wonderful, atmospheric novella. Read it if you're a fan of Uprooted by Naomi Novak.

The writing is gorgeous, evoking feelings of lush and dark woods and touching upon themes of folklore and rebirth. Well-paced and with just enough worldbuilding to make the story immersive. I cannot wait for the next book in the series!
