4.5/5 rounded up!
Impressive worldbuilding for only ~100 pages. I wish it spent a *little* more time with Silver and Tobias as they were getting to know each other. 380ish year fantasy age gap nonwithstanding , I really like their dynamic and wish I'd been given a little more time to "buy in" to this stoic old forest guardian and this plucky folklorist coming to care for each other.
Regardless, for such a short book, I thought he characters were really strong and engaging. Tobias' arrangement with the forest was fascinating, Silver was extremely charming, and I loved how kick ass Mrs. Silver ended up being. I would've loved to spend more time with her and Tobias as they went on their adventures together!

First 5 star read of the year. What a brilliant novella published in 2019 - there is so much depth to the characters in Greenhollow Wood where a mysterious man has lived for 400 years, stuck like a tree but not quite. It takes the appearance of a young and curious man to turn everything on its head. Suddenly the past is coming into the present threatening what is growing between these two men.
Romance, ancient myth, and surprises. I wish I had words. Just wow, I loved it. Tobias is such a grump with a heart of gold. I can see myself coming back to this one time and time again.

Wow. Phenomenal, evocative, & haunting! This is definitely inspiring lots of ideas for me. In some ways it feels so unique, like I haven’t encountered anything like it, and in other ways the tale is as classic as every myth & legend there is. I guess that’s part of the magic of all fairytales. Can’t wait to read book two.
Read this if you enjoy folklore, ancient Celtic/English religion & legends, earth elementals, paganism, queer stories. Similar vibe as books like Follow Me to the Ground, Ghost Hall, Bear & the Nightingale, Wink Poppy Midnight, Witcher, Ash, Wildwood Dancing, etc.
