I whizzed through this. I kept thinking that I wanted to see more; so much happened off-page that I would have loved reading. I wanted the book to be longer, for the character conflicts to be paid more attention, for Maverick's character development to be displayed more.

wow, what a really refreshing and insightful read. I really enjoyed the first book that I read from this author and this book was a well regarded follow up. I feel like the unique perspective of a teen Dad is something I haven’t really explored much, and I truly appreciated the insight into the structure of lifestyle, the burdens faced by others, and how the intricacies of community both uplift and weigh down people in disadvantage situations. Overall, it was an amazing read. I’m so happy to have been recommended this.

It was so good to be back in Angie Thomas's brain. This book was a quiet, deep-dive of Maverick Carter before there was Starr. It's a bit slice-of-life in way "The Hate U Give" wasn't. While many things happen in this story, there is no shocking moment like Starr watching her best friend murdered in front of her. If you're looking for a coming-of-age story about a black teenager, this is it. I really enjoyed myself, and I'm glad I picked it up.
