DNF 50 pages in.

I loved the author two other books but this one is a massive no for me.

I loved the writing style in the other books but I found it very unpleasant in this one : the author tried to much to be creative or original and the result is a barely coherent prose.

Also if the author's other books had a nice balance of beautiful writings and tough topics, a sort of balance between light and dark, this one was all misery and the worst of humanity. The first 50 pages alone have drugs, child neglect, prostitution, child abuse, pedophilia... YEP nope !

While I understand the author was trying to bring awareness to the real-life case, this book was difficult to get through. Extremely slow paced, arguably boring, and the whole book is just SAD. Finished it and felt relief that it was over. It was well written and I appreciate the attempt to endear the characters despite their flaws, but I don’t think I would recommend this book to others

Trigger warnings for absolutely everything. Seriously one of the most upsetting books I’ve encountered, if still well-written, moving, and important.

Books like this make me feel that rating books (or any form of cultural output) is such a futile way of discussing them. I might just give it up entirely.

I picked this book up thinking it would be something completely different, and altogether less bleak. In all honesty, I would never have picked it up had I known what it was about, because I am generally too sensitive to stomach stories like this. I wouldn’t say I’m “glad” I did read it, but I do feel a deep deep empathy for the characters in this book that will leave me moved for a long time. This book has dug a hole into me that will never quite close up. I really appreciate what the author wanted to convey and I think she did a phenomenal job. The world is cruel and bleak.

Depressed/5.
