Overall, a solid collection, with a few misses. Still, a good selection and variety of stories. There were a lot of authors new to me, and I’ll be looking at their other work for sure.
Some standouts:
Be Not Affaid by Ashia Monet [4.75]
Obsessed with the religious themes here. Only wish it was longer. A quote:
She was hypnotized by the music, by the warmth that filled the building, which had felt almost corpse-like in its silence. The church, it seemed, only came alive when bodies filled its pews.
The Landscape of Broken Things by Brent Lambert [4.5]
A real weird one, a bit surreal. Something about it just hit. It felt like the prologue to a longer story though, and wish we got more world building.
Mother, Daughter, and the Devil by Donyae Coles [5]
Perfect. A real tale. There were some really good quotes. One that I liked:
Dealing with the Devil always ends bad, ’cept for some especially clever men. Before Lily was clever, but she weren’t no man.

There were some interesting ideas, but it wasn't my brand of horror. I was mostly bored the whole way through.
The first three stories were okay (hence the second star), but several others just didn't click for me - some too vague or surreal, some with dialogue too stilted, etc - so I ended up DNFing a little over halfway through.
