Aight, another rant review. I thought at LEAST I'll give it 2 stars because I like Arjun, but what in the actuality is going on with him and every character here? The downgrade of this book is so astounding, given that I truly enjoyed The Damned.
Okay, let me make points on why I despise this book so much.
1. Philippa Montrose. A new heroine in my "Top 10 list of the most unbearable, annoying heroine I have ever read in my entire life". It doesn't take a lot to be disliked by me, but to be hated THIS much is a rare occasion. Everything that happened to her in this book is entirely her fault, but of course, she keeps blaming Arjun for making things difficult for him and then making a pity party about her situation, as if that could justify her stupidity and the peril she always put herself into. I truly felt bad for Arjun for having to put up with Pippa at all, because I genuinely just wish that worthless girl could just die. She's also very... annoyingly clueless when it comes to non-white people and the way she's so proud of being English while also thinking she had it so hard while sort of dismissing Arjun at the beginning just makes me hate her 10x more.
2. I am confused with the direction Renee Ahdieh went for with Celine's character. In the previous 2 books, she's very stubborn, and brave, and she loves fiercely, but she does not trust easily due to plenty of circumstances, and understandably so. But in this book, you expect me to believe she just decided to blindly trust a random woman that turns out to be her mother, and then not sees anything wrong with the woman? Her mother clearly does HORRIBLE THINGS to the Sylvan Wyld and she loves to manipulate everyone, but Celine was so angry at Bastien when he told her that he's getting uneasy around her mother? And throughout this whole book, Celine was so fucking useless and whines too much, and did NOTHING. In a span of a book, the author somehow made me hate this stupid girl.
3. Celine and Bastien... yeah, there is no way Bastien would just blindly follow Celine and not think of his family at all. He just... stays with Celine and does not give a shit about the Court of Lions at all. I hated them in this book. Astonishing.
4. There is NOTHING BELIEVABLE ABOUT PIPPA AND ARJUN'S ATTRACTION FOR EACH OTHER! It was so much of "He was attracted to her" and "He did not know when Pippa felt like a safe place for him, but she is" WHERE? WHERE THE FUCK DID THAT COME FROM??? This wretched girl made your life miserable, you should've just let her die because clearly, she wants independence so bad but she kept getting into situations that should get her killed, and it was all because of her own initiative (because, again, she is so fucking stupid). There is no appeal to them being a couple.
5. The plot was so over the place. It was super slow and suddenly in the last 50 pages, it took a bizarre turn, and the end conflict of the book was so quick, I can barely register it in my head. It was entirely lazy to just dump those shit at the end when there was no build-up to that plot point at all, and I fucking hate the story and the ending and everything in the book.
6. What the fuck is the purpose of giving Michael a pov in this book? He's entirely useless and seeing him so deadpanned on finding Celine because he was angry she didn't choose him and wanted an explanation so bad was annoying and I don't give a shit for it. Truly he was so fucking useless and annoying, but what else is new.
Whew, that is lengthy. But I need to rant about how much everything about this book makes me so angry, especially because I love Odette and Jae and the rest of Court of Lions, but they did not appear here almost at all, and other fun side characters are non-existent here. But if the last book will have them, then maybe I'll read it. I lost hope for Celine, Bastien, Pippa, Arjun, and every major character in this book specifically. And I decided to not give it just one star because this book isn't problematic that way, I just fucking hated the direction the characters are going, and some things in here are just bad and confusing.

Update 4/2: WE HAVE A COVER! I was hoping this one would be green.
I can’t wait for a cover reveal! As gorgeous as The Damned was, I don’t know how Penguin is going to top that.
So from the blurb this is going to be a Pippa x Arjun book. I kind of doubt I’ll love them as much as I love Celine and Bastien BUT since we got multiple POV’s in The Damned I can only imagine that there will be multiple POV’s in The Righteous as well. Plus, I loved the interactions between Pippa and Arjun in the last book.
