“Kiss me and make me forget. Again and again.”

I am in love with this series. Even though this third instalment takes us away from the familiar stomping grounds of New Orleans' French Quarter, it doesn't stray too far from our story. I loved how we got different perspectives this time around, with a new blossoming romance taking place alongside our favourite pairing (Celine and Sebastien, of course).

I'm mad at myself for not realising this series wasn't a trilogy before I started reading it. I held off until this book was released thinking I'd have a complete series. Wrong. Now I'm left desperate because that cliffhanger killed me.

I have now picked up my brain cells that this BRILLIANT book scattered.

First of all, a kind thank you to the publisher who granted me an e-ARC of this book. I never in a million years thought I'd get this.

I have loved this series for so long, and you get this attached to a series, you're almost afraid to read the next book. I felt this deeply when I learned that The Righteous would be mostly in Pipa's and Arjun's povs. Arjun was one of my favorite side-characters in the first two books, but I loved Bastien so much that I didn't know how it would work. But HOLY MOLY.

I repeat. HOLY. MOLY.

Let's take it step by step. Our new main character duo!

I will follow Arjun to the Vale and beyond. Seriously. Someone tries to hurt my boy, and I'll hunt them down. I can honestly say that Arjun is one of all-time favorite characters, alongside Bastien and Magnus Bane. Arjun isn't as flashy as Magnus but they both have this coping mechanism of hiding their pain and traumas with wit and indifference (that isn't as real as they pretend to). Arjun is also as smart and resourceful as Bastien is, but when Bastien commands the scene almost by attacking it, Arjun takes the reins from afar in the "I know I'm awesome and I'm happy from my place of honor over here". I truly, truly, TRULY LOVED ARJUN.

And Pipa, this girl is an inspiration. It's not that she discovered herself in this book. She was always brave, good, and endearing. It was that she embraced who she is and what she wants. She can a little frustrating (haha) but she's so endearing, likeable, and RELATABLE. Celine is a brazen character, but Pipa is as strong and wonderful main character as Celine. Reading her pov was like a breath of fresh air. It was a beauty to finally see a character like Pipa as the main lead. I think Pipa is more nuanced than Celine, in fact.

Plot

I'm usually very good at predicting what was going to happen, but in this case, I just lay back in my bed and enjoyed the wild ride through the Vale. The pacing is the same characteristic pacing from the first two books, and even though at times, it slowed down, I enjoyed the characters and the world too much to care. I can read ten books set in this universe, and it won't get old.

Worldbuilding

Mind-blowing. Ethereal as Arjun. (See what I did there?)

For those who are interested in povs, The Righteous includes povs by Arjun and Pipa (mostly), Bastien (some, thank goodness), Celine, Michael, and Emilie (few).

Overall, I believe The Righteous is brilliantly crafted, from the characters down to the narrative messages the author has included. The author conveyed those messages in such a superb, elegant, and succinct way. She tackled colonialism and misogyny, tore them down, and spit them out.

One of my favorite series, and one perfect sequel that is like no other. Cannot wait for the fourth and last book.

“Sometimes even the wickedest of creatures are capable of the greatest love.”

This story picks up after the events of The Damned, which I remember was very much a cliffhanger. Specifically, Odette was seriously injured by a werewolf and her friends are looking for a way to save her life, requiring Arjun, who is half fae, to go into the world of the fae to find a magical way to save her, since the regular world of New Orleans cannot. Whereas the first two books primarily took place in the world we know, this one takes place primarily in the fae world, mostly following Arjun and Pippa. Pippa, who is human, is engage to be married but she has just discovered the world is not what it seemed: there are vampires and werewolves and fae. Celine is in the fae world and Pippa, being the loyal friend that she is, wants to find her and make sure she is safe, so she enters the fae world and immediately finds herself in danger of the fae. Luckily, Arjun is there to save her. Not-so-luckily, he has to fake a marriage proposal in order to make sure no harm comes to her. Fae only marry once, so this is a big deal. Pippa and Arjun are forced to keep up with the charade, but along the way they find that they do actually have feelings for one another. When Pippa finds out Arjun has brought her siblings to her, which is the only reason she agreed to get married to a human in the first place, so falls even more deeply with Arjun. This book was mostly an Arjun and Pippa book, not a Bastien and Celine book, and honestly I am fine with that. Bastien and Celine were kind of annoying in this book, being in that phase where they are not completely honest with each other and Celine being blinded by her mother and not really seeing she might be up to no good. The end of this book DID NOT MAKE ME OKAY. If I though The Damned had a cliffhanger ending, this ending dialed it up even more: Celine’s mom is gravely injured, and she separated from Bastien, basically on her own. And then Pippa is bitten and hauled off by werewolves before Arjun can get to her. Does this mean she’s going to turn into one??? What?? And what did that final epilogue seen mean with the unidentified figures nodding to one another about how well the plan went?? This series is honestly such an underrated fantasy. More people should read it, it’s very painful but very worth it. I think the next book is the last one and I’m very interested to see how it all wraps up.

I can’t rate this one a full 5* as I did with the previous books honestly. It just wasn’t at all what I was expecting…

I know WHY the story was told as it was and why we had to follow secondary characters for the majority of the book but it just felt a bit like I was being thrown into a completely different series in a way. I did enjoy myself and did really like the book but it just wasn’t what I thought it was going to be at all, compared to book 1 it feels really jarring.

That said I did like following Pippa and Arjun for the majority of the book and I get that it was necessary to make the ending more impactful but it was a bit slow at times and I was just counting the pages till I got to a Bastien/Céline chapter. Hopefully the next book is a bit more balanced in POV’s and the final book comes out later this year so I can get this series finished!
