I hated most of this book, but I let out the breath I was holding when the book was over, and I felt hopeful for all of the characters. Loved the supporting characters most - the sister and brother-in-law and the mother made the rest of the characters fuller. I really, really walked to hate Ryle all the way through the end, and I think I always will. Author gave him an out from the start that he didn’t deserve and which many women would’ve used as excuses and these same men would use as permission.

Expected very little from this book. Verity was very popular, but I’d really, really disliked it. Thought this would end up the same way. Glad I was proved wrong.

I do not like Colleen Hoover, but I read this book because of my family. I wish there would've been a trigger warning for this book because I DID NOT realize what I was getting myself into, I thought this book was a rom-com. I grew to like the characters, but I still don't like Hoover's writing. I also do not like Blake Lively.

I am way too emotional after devouring this book in one day simply because I'm going through it now... And after reading some negative reviews on it, I want my review to be one that comes from my heart, not just my emotions... So once I've had the time to process it, I'll leave a more thorough review but I'll leave you with this quote from the book (one of many that hold such powerful meaning, especially if you have ever gone through something so heartbreaking)

"As I stare back at him, I think about how easy it is for humans to make judgements when we're standing on the outside of a situation. I spent years judging my mother's situation. It's easy when we're on the outside to believe that we would walk away without needing a second thought if a person mistreated us. It's easy to say we couldn't continue to love someone who mistreats us when we aren't the ones feeling the love of that person.

When you experience it firsthand, it isn't so easy to hate the person who mistreats you when most of the time they're your godsend."

my first coho novel after dunking on her for years and it was better than I expected I suppose? not to say it was "good" because it was so unadventurous and a bit elementary tbh, I can see why its a bestseller now. this is why people are so worried about the future of reading because there are so many carbon copies of this and what does it add to our society?? there is an inconceivable amount of media and writing available to us now, and I fear that overwhelm leads people to pick up the easiest, fastest book they can find, leading us to writing with absolutely no risks, so while it's not technically bad it's just so...lifeless. will be reading more coho because I just have to get to some of the more unhinged writing ive seen being thrown around, it's so insane.

Some parts of this book - particularly describing the feelings of loving someone you know to be harmful, and the justifying problematic behaviour in someone you love, were emotive and handled well.
I do however think some aspects of domestic violence were glossed over and/or not handled particularly well and could be a problematic read for someone still in an abusive situation.

I loved this book. I was tentative to read based on some things I had heard through the grape vine about the quality of the book, story, writing, etc. I’m glad that I tend to block out the opinions of others and read based on what I want to read - because otherwise I would have missed out on this incredible and riveting story. Colleen Hoover beautifully captures the heartbreak and tragedy that exists within the cycle of abuse. She also gives such life to the characters that you find yourself understanding Lily
and her desire to want to forgive Ryle for the harm he inflicts upon her.
Hoover realistically depicts the idea of loving your abuser and the internal struggle of doing what you know you should do for your own wellbeing and safety, versus what you want to be able to do for the love you feel for another person. The way that Hoover intertwined present day with Lily’s past helped to change the trajectory of the story and gave layers to the experience of the read. Amazing book and one that should be read by all who are able. It should definitely be kept in mind that individuals should practice self care before, during, and after reading.
