The Family Upstairs

Lisa Jewell

The premise of this novel seemed interesting so I gave it a try and it didn’t disappoint. I found it to be an exciting thriller, a page-turner that caught my attention from the beginning even though it was a slow burner.
I’ve really liked the three perspectives that were used by the author to share the plot. They weren’t confusing; you could tell which characters each part was focusing on in every given moment, and in which time (past or present) the action was happening. In a way having three “narrators” helped me to get to know better all the main characters and it helped the plot to advance in a more paced way, since the line of the story that uncovered the mystery was diffused more evenly through the novel.
The plot was capturing and soon it became extremely creepy in a believable way. That’s not to say that everything that happened in the novel was realistic, but it made sense in regards of the plot, it was cohesive to the reality of the story, so it didn’t disturb me.
Nitpicking, I’ve to say that I’ve expected more in two aspects. When Clemency starts telling her side of the story and there are some discrepancies with Henry’s own narration, I was expecting for this novel to be a case of an unreliable narrator. And while there were some inconsistencies, the story never unfolded that way. Also I would have enjoyed the story more if Libby and Miller did more research and found more information their way (and maybe more discrepancies) instead of having another character telling the whole thing. But again, these points didn’t disturb my reading, there were unfair expectations on my side and the mystery was good anyway.
I have to finish talking about Henry, a character that gave me a headache. Maybe it was because he told his story in first person and that made him seem more close, maybe it was because I always cheer for the underdog, or maybe because Lucy seemed to get a happy ending after all the hell she went through unlike Henry; but I wanted more for Henry, and seeing him close to the end of the novel lonely and pathological eccentric, gave me a small heartache. And then the last chapter happened and I didn’t know how to feel anymore, because yes, all the signs of Henry not being so good in the head were there, through his dark actions and questionable excuses, and yet I wanted some kind of positive closure for him. I say this because the ending was supposed to be a happy one that wrapped up everything, but I couldn’t help feeling a foul aftertaste; and it was because that last chapter made me think about my own moral ambiguity towards a character like Henry's. But well that’s on me and I least I can say that Henry was an interesting character in a novel that had a few of them (and here I include David and Birdie, because even though they were the main “villians” and to be hated, they were good characters for that purpose).

Encore une pepitas signée Lisa Jewell

3 stars- In my opinion, this book was a bit over-hyped. The beginning did get my attention, but I felt the story slowed in the middle. However, I did enjoy the ending and how it wrapped everything up. I do plan to read other books from this author.

I enjoyed reading this book, alot of twists and turns I did not expect. The ending was even more surprising. Although yes I enjoyed this book it was not a 5* read for me. I look forward to reading more of Lisa Jewells books.

Another well known thriller author I have the joy of discovering late. This was a very suspenseful and intriguing story and I'm excited about all the Jewells to come.

4.5 stars rounded up. I really enjoyed this book. So well written and disturbing. Intrigued the whole time.
